A chorus needs to get straight to the point. Any time I go into a session, I write around the story. Once you get to the point in the chorus after a build up in verse, it makes it more powerful as a story. Know your who, what, when, where, and it will help you effectively make a powerful choice in your choruses
Every song has it’s journey. To break it down from a technical viewpoint will not be the formula for a sure hit! The stars must line up and the dynamics are endless. Having worked with Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones, Julio Iglesias and Madonna in the studio you quickly realize all the criteria is thrown out. That is what they call “The Magic” and it is a real thing. It is a very delicate experience and most will never realize it happening. The last thing you want to do is analyze it. That will keep you from expressing your own individuality which is our real treasure.

For me a chorus should be catchy enough to encourage the listener to sing along. I guess you could argue the clue is in the name ‘chorus’ a collection of voices. From the point of view of substance or what it should contain, there is no set rule or standard. Sometimes it’s just one word, or a sentence, other times it’s lengthy, but it always encourages the listener to participate.
