How can you ensure that your writing is high-quality when working on a deadline?

Deadlines help me write more effectively. Without them, I would probably still be working on the 50th draft of my short story, as we all know, writers tend to procrastinate a lot. However, deadlines help us get 'in line' with our writing.

It's easier for me to identify those things which I know will lead to a poor outcome...and then consciously avoid them. Working backwards, cheating on the number of drafts I need is a killer. When content, context, flow, word choice and every element has been gone over and I'm satisfied...there needs to be one more rewrite. If not, foaget it. Something-a typo, double space, missed capital, something will be missed. I need the space to have what I believe is a perfect paper in front of me to go over with a fine-tooth comb and ferret out the imperfections.

In my experience: 1. Allow yourself to write a crappy first draft. 2. Comprehend the task and create a template and a roadmap. 3. Understand your audience, research, and prune your vocabulary. 4. Separate drafting and revising – don’t write and revise simultaneously, because your mind operates both as a thinker vs critic - diverting focus to write productively and effortlessly. 5. Understand your approach: Ignore the reader if you have a top-down approach – this helps you stay focused and connected to your thoughts. However, when applying the bottom-up approach imagine conversing with the reader to focus on essentials. Please be sure to understand your strengths when choosing an approach to make your copy structured and easy to revise.

I always try to take a moment to walk away from my first draft before reviewing and revising. Get some fresh air, grab a cup of tea. Anything that distracts your brain for a second before you come back to your writing. That way when you do return it's with a fresh set of eyes, ready to edit! Try not to just focus on spelling errors. Read what you wrote out loud to make sure it makes sense and has the tone you want to convey.
