1 - Make sure the novelty of your invention is solid. 2 - Make sure your invention is solving a real problem and it is useful. 3 - Make sure the non-obviousness of your idea is strong. (What this means is if someone with at least the same skill level as you tried to solve the same problem as you, are they likely to come up with more or less the same solution? If the answer is 'yes', your idea lacks non-obviousness, which is a problem) 4 - Allocate financial resources to professionally perform prior art search on your invention. Your prior art search as an inventor can never be as good as a professional who does that for a living. If you are serious about patenting your invention, money spent on this prior art will definitely be worth it.

You can know if your invention is practical and good for the audience when you'll search the market and get feedback from potential users. You can also review if there is already a patent or publication related to your invention. Then only you'll be able to know if your invention is unique.

I agree, and of course it all starts with having a well defined, well supported invention. Preferably including evidence that there is a non obvious technical effect starting from various possible prior art documents ( at least when the invention is in food/chemistry/life sciences or the like)
