You first need to identify your target audience, and build your conference around them. Feature presentations and items specific to that audience so as to attract and keep their attention.

What are the objectives of the presentation? Do you know? Have you settled on the objectives of the workshop from your point of view? Now discern how your audience might describe the objectives they have for the topic. Meet them at the place where your subject becomes real for them. Search for the passion they have for the subject. Inspire them to be passionate about the subject. Try to get their buy-in.

I always ask organisers, "How would you like your audience to think, feel, speak and act differently?" and then I use that to adapt my message. Remember that speakers are facilitators of change and WILL make people uncomfortable if they do their job right. Be careful of avoiding making people uncomfortable for the sake of being "correct". You might lose impact.

Even while planning the logistics of your event, you should keep the needs and wants of your target audience top of mind. Don't just ask yourself what you think your target audience would like, ask them! Leverage social media to get real time feedback by using polls. You can ask your audience what type of entertainment act they would be most excited to see, or you can ask them about what types of breaks from content they value the most.
