while the Dev team is working on the development of your feature/User story we should utilize this time window to prepare our basic automation code or changes that would be required for handling the new feature, Our aim should be to keep the feature file (in case of BDD) or the test Class (in case of TestNG) clean and minimal i.e. only the steps of a test case/ scenario should be mentioned here and all the testdata setup, config calls, req creation using the test data should be done in background of these steps.

This is one the the common mistakes I found from my experience, we now have a lot of automated test suites, and there are multiple packs of automation suites that run one after another. Problem is, few of the TCs are common across these packages, and run multiple times, therefore reducing the efficiency, plus increases time. Another is, during the life span of these TC, features change regularly, and these dont get updated in automated TC as often as it should. so Reviewing all of these and updating them is very important task, that should be conducted in regular intervals.

try to be in sync with your dev team and product team, specially the product team. this gives you additional validations that what you are testing is as per the product/business requirements. Also keep your qa team members in sync, having a regular team calls to discuss the new features that you have tested or they have tested and all the changes everyone has made to to automation code for their respective features, discussions gives you plenty of opportunities to keep you product knowledge base up to date and finding out more efficient solutions for the automation code

The thought of an "Agile QA team" is an anti pattern for Agile. Too many organizations fail in Agility adoption since they don't reorganize the roles and culture of Agile but continues to use waterfall structure. Built in quality can only be supported by change in organization where roles support Agility.

Taking a step back, try to understand what is the “Job to be done” here. Is having a high test coverage addressing a symptom or the root cause? If the “Job to be done” here is to produce high quality solutions, perhaps reviewing the entire development process is a better first step. Aim to build quality early into the process rather than depending on just the QA folks. After all, the entire team is responsible for the quality of the solution. There are many other best practices as others have stated but understanding the right problem/job to tackle is the first step to go.

First and foremost thing would be to align the story requirements (acceptance criteria) with the test cases. Subsequently the test strategy/plan has to be shared with relevant stakeholders (PO/BA and/or business) prior to execution for comprehensive coverage.
