However, not all projects are equally valuable for your career growth and satisfaction. How can you ensure you are working on the right projects that align with your goals, skills, and interests? Here are some tips to help you make smart choices and avoid wasting your time and energy.

1 Assess your current situation

Before you take on a new project, you need to evaluate your current situation and workload. How many projects are you already working on? How much time and resources do they require? How well are they progressing and delivering results? How do they fit with your personal and professional development plans? Be honest with yourself and your clients about your availability and capacity. Don't overcommit or underdeliver. Prioritize the projects that are most important and urgent, and delegate or decline the ones that are not.

…an den richtigen Projekten zu arbeiten ist etwas was sehr subjektiv ist und auf den strategischen und Lernzielen sowie den pers?nlichen Pr?ferenzen basiert. Ich wollte mich z. B. immer weiter entwickeln, also habe ich geschaut, dass es eine Komponente drin hat, wo ich etwas lernen kann (entweder mein Wissen vertiefen oder erweitern) und dann ist natürlich die Frage passt es von der Branche, der Firma, aber auch vom Team her. und kann ich das erfüllen was verlangt wird. Diese Evaluierung nehme ich vor jedem Projekt vor.

Once you have a clear picture of your current situation, you need to define your criteria for choosing the right projects. What are your short-term and long-term goals as an HR consultant? What are your strengths and areas of improvement? What are your passions and interests? What are the market trends and demands in your field? What are the benefits and risks of each project? How do they align with your values and ethics? Create a list of criteria that reflect your personal and professional aspirations, and use them to evaluate each project opportunity.

3 Research the projects

After you have defined your criteria, you need to research the projects that match them. Find out as much as you can about the project scope, objectives, deliverables, timeline, budget, and stakeholders. Who are the clients and what are their expectations and needs? Who are the team members and what are their roles and responsibilities? What are the challenges and opportunities of the project? How will the project impact your reputation and network? How will the project contribute to your learning and growth? Gather relevant and reliable information that will help you make an informed decision.

Researching in this case is critical in setting yourself up for success. You want to be beyond understanding the current state, it is understanding the wider impact of the project, how it ties to the department or organizational strategy, who the stakeholders are what you will be bale to bring to the project from an expertise perspective and where it will stretch you to grow.

4 Compare the options

Once you have researched the projects, you need to compare the options and weigh the pros and cons. How do they rank according to your criteria? Which ones offer the most value and potential for your career? Which ones align with your skills and interests? Which ones suit your personality and style? Which ones fit your schedule and availability? Which ones have the best feedback and reviews? Don't be afraid to ask questions and seek feedback from your peers, mentors, or clients. Use a scoring system or a matrix to help you visualize and compare the options.

5 Make a decision

After you have compared the options, you need to make a decision and commit to it. Choose the project that best meets your criteria and offers the most benefits for your career. Communicate your decision clearly and respectfully to your clients and stakeholders. Explain your reasons and expectations, and confirm the details and agreements. Be confident and enthusiastic about your choice, and show your professionalism and dedication. Remember that you can always revisit your decision if the project changes or new opportunities arise.

6 Evaluate the results

Finally, after you have completed the project, you need to evaluate the results and reflect on your experience. How did the project go and what did you achieve? How did the project meet or exceed your criteria and goals? How did the project challenge and improve your skills and knowledge? How did the project affect your satisfaction and motivation? How did the project expand your network and reputation? What did you learn and what can you improve? Collect feedback and testimonials from your clients and stakeholders, and celebrate your successes and lessons learned.

I believe there is one big metrics for picking a project. Whether the client will over the medium term help you achieve your goals. This is further divided into: 1. Whether the client adds the kind of revenue to your P&L that justifies time investment on that client. 2. Whether the project will become a case study worth showcasing. 3. Whether the project adds to Growth, Productivity or Sustainability for the client.

Access the various projects that would propeller you towards your goals and choose the projects that are within your financial budget and those that would make a substantial impact to your business.
