What trainings have they had in the past? What has been the reception and follow-up afterward? Asking questions like "What does success look like after this training project is complete" allows you to gain more insight on the purpose and desire for training. Having an organizational employee present to help with setup or technical issues helps the facilitator provide the best experience for participants. Finally, understand the logistics around gaining feedback from the training participants and plan to measure behavior changes along the way.

First, to communicate the intended outcomes of the training workshop, the number of participants, department mix, seniority and development levels. A good facilitator or trainer will then communicate the workshop requirements for the training day, including projectors, brainstorming spaces, facilitators, virtual whiteboards etc.

Facilitation is a skill, an art, and something that you get a feel for with experience. It is not the same as training or coaching yet many will assume that if they can train, they can facilitate. In my opinion, the only real way to develop this skill set is to learn alongside a mentor. By taking less significant aspects of a workshop, you co-facilitate so you are in the process, learning as you are doing. This needs robust contracting between the two of you and thorough debriefing afterwards in order for the mentee's learning to happen. One of the main things a facilitator has to be competent at is being able to flex in the moment and go where the group need to go. This is no time for a fixed agenda.

Understanding the information that needs to be conveyed is one thing but having the confidence and skill can be learnt. Support to build someone up with training, coaching, guidance and trial and error. Doing trial runs can help and providing feedback. Videoing workshops for them only to watch back whilst scary can be helpful.

The least you can do is provide the briefing for them if they are experienced, if not do the most and the best which is to teach, and guide as well as show them Bring them along with you, let them see you in action and let them feel the beauty of it then show them the skill breakdown on how it was done the taught process then allow them to facilitate a short segment with you watching them for better feedback and performance outcome

Have the designated facilitator of that specific workshop at the last minute just sit in as a passive observer and have a colleague run his workshop He / she will be enlightened by the colleague on some points and the different methodology of the same workshop and same group of participants

Apart from getting feedbacks solely for the development and improvement of the facilitators, the facilitators themselves, through their engagement with the participants and their observations, are the best people you can get their inputs on the programme/ workshop as a whole. My team of trainers and facilitators make it an effort to stay back for 30 minutes or so at the end of the day to give each other feedback and provide insights of what we have experienced throughout. This is crucial especially when the workshops is more than a day, at the every lease, you can make some needed improvements on the next day to enhance the learning experience.

Video tape the facilitator’s workshop and then go over the different aspects of the facilitator’s delivery, content, tone, how he/she addresses the questions from the participants with him. Watching a full video of your own facilitation or presentation is very revealing.

Getting immediate feedback from the participants of the training is key. I recommend providing the participants time to fill out a survey prior to leaving is essential. You also want to debrief with your trainers while the training is still fresh in their minds. The combination of the participant feedback and the trainer debrief, can provide insight on what changes/deletions/additions would assist in making the training better. Every training group won't be the same, however the ultimate goal is for all participants to receive and retain the same information.
