Speaking personally, I found that the scientific rigor required of EE, ME, CE, ChemE and Materials can be very helpful in teaching one to formulate algorithms and to evaluate their fitness. It’s a combination of automation and critical thinking. Even though I didn’t attend an ivy-league school, I am of the opinion that MIT and CMU have the right approach - take the courses of study that interest you as an engineer or scientist and build your degree program with your advisor to get all the requirements you need to get that piece of paper. I’ve never liked labels all that much. Follow your passion, it will lead you to the right place.

System components, should be thought of as configuration items (CI) and controlled using a formal modification (change) management process, which ensures a formal oversight of the technical design impacts. Its absolutely critical that the design management decision process is fully recorded within the status accounting archives for future reference

2 Change control

Change control is a subset of CM that focuses on the evaluation, approval, implementation, and verification of changes to system components and configurations. Change control helps you to avoid unauthorized, unnecessary, or conflicting changes that could introduce errors, defects, or vulnerabilities to the system. Change control also helps you to monitor and document the impact and outcome of each change, and to communicate and coordinate with the stakeholders involved in the change process. Change control typically involves the following steps: initiating a change request, analyzing the change, planning the change, reviewing and approving the change, executing the change, testing and validating the change, and closing the change request.

System lifecycle is the sequence of phases that a system goes through from its inception to its retirement. System lifecycle helps you to organize and manage the activities and resources needed to develop, deploy, operate, maintain, and dispose of a system. System lifecycle also helps you to align the system's objectives and requirements with the stakeholders' expectations and needs. System lifecycle can vary depending on the type, scope, and complexity of the system, but it usually includes the following phases: concept, design, implementation, integration, testing, deployment, operation, maintenance, and disposal.

Comparison of Life Cycle Models (Forsberg, Mooz, and Cotterman 2005) is a great reference to understand the terminology for life cycle stages across the industry. Generally, the life cycle of a system is as follows: concept, development, production, utilization/support, and retirement stage. Specifically, for the DoD model in the figure, the decision points are not addressed and are as follows: Material Development Decision (MDD), Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review(CDR), and Full-Rate Production (FRP) decision review. Each of these life cycle decision points require specific deliverables to stakeholders and gate funding distributions for the next stage in the system's life cycle.

System verification and validation (V&V) are the processes of checking and confirming that a system meets its specifications and expectations. V&V help you to ensure that the system components and configurations are correct, complete, consistent, and compliant with the system's requirements and standards. V&V also help you to identify and correct any errors, defects, or deviations that may affect the system's functionality and performance. V&V can be performed at different levels and stages of the system lifecycle, using various methods and techniques, such as inspections, reviews, audits, tests, simulations, and demonstrations.
