Getting to know students well is indeed crucial for educators to create a supportive and effective learning environment. One of the approaches to achieve this is organizing events that offer educational opportunities and entertainment. This can be a valuable strategy to engage with students, build relationships, and gain insights into their interests, strengths, and challenges. This will have the advantage of capturing students' attention and enthusiasm. Students are more likely to actively participate and engage in the event. This engagement creates opportunities for educators to interact with students in a relaxed and informal setting. An example of such events might include field trips, camps, and community service projects.

There is a lack of leadership in organizations as well as in students of today. Yet, we focus on wanting to graduate students who are able to lead. There is a clearly a significant big gap between academia and real world. Although, the underlying issue been there for long, yet the issue is prevailing on a larger scale worldwide. The AI has come to the surface with full attention and the gap is even getting bigger than it was. Alignment is needed. Yet, what is needed is bigger and greater.

I have slightly different opinion here. Curriculum needs to be developed based on Students’ leadership needs rather than students leadership need be aligned with curriculum

When students are taking Career and Technical classes (CTE) and getting involved with a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) it can be a very powerful combination. CTSO’s focus on developing the whole student. SkillsUSA is a student lead organization for middle school, high school and post-secondary students who want to grow their personal, workplace, and academic skills. We focus on the WHOLE student through leadership curriculum that can be embedded into the classroom. In my classroom, I watched shy students grow into student leaders within our state. As educators it is our job to help our students recognize their potential and give them the opportunities to flourish. CTSO’s help develop our next leaders.

Yes, all good ideas and thoughts. I would be concerned if this was the limit of student leadership initiatives. Engaging students within and beyond the school community opens up possibilities for students to pursue and lead areas of interest. As we cant possibly predict what areas students may wish to take leadership in, alignment with the curriculum could limit possibilities and opportunities. I believe having structures and processes in place to harness student’s interest and energy supports them in taking the lead.

The alignment of student leadership initiatives with curriculum will definitely ensure seamless integration of both components that will result in holistic development of students. However the two are considered as separate components.The student leadership initiatives need to be infused with curriculum and rather with subjects. This integration will result into sequential development of students and will further enhance the learning outcomes along with the overall skill building in learners. As an example, Consider the students learning natural resources topic can be given a project that demands ways or methods to conserve resources and conducting surveys with community and further create an awareness regarding the same.

While I agree that it’s important to give students agency, my wondering is around the ‘age appropriate’ aspect. I’ve always believed it’s stage not age. Some students are way ahead of their peers in developing executive functions and their role could be more nuanced. Student leadership needs to be redefined, don’t you think?

Providing students with voice and choice requires a thoughtful and flexible approach. It is important to offer options within parameters. Within these parameters, students should have the right to choose activities, projects, or topics that align with their interests, learning styles, or strengths. Educators can provide a wide range of options to help their students. This choice empowers students and promotes ownership of their learning. Also, it is important to create activities that can be adapted or personalized by students to suit their preferences and learning needs. This flexibility allows students to approach the content in a way that resonates with them, while still ensuring alignment with the curriculum goals.

I have found it useful to get pupils to share their areas of interests in creating a fit for purpose enrichment offering. This isn’t simply giving them everything they want at once, but using the data to verify staffing, capacity and budgets, and operate a carrousel of options each term. This empowers them and creates a sense of two way dialogue.

Providing choice and voice is one of the best ways to measure students' abilities extensively. Having some boundaries but letting them explore and make decisions helps them build responsibility and ownership of their work. Moreover, they feel empowered when they are given a bit of flexibility and consider their inputs valuable. There is also a higher level of creativity that students can exhibit in the way.

When students have the choice to engage and advocate for what they are passionate about, their age will not limit them. When empowered with choice and voice, students step up and step into their own potential. And when the right mentor is matched to those students, they are then inspired to exceed boundaries and expectations in making an impact.

Creating meaningful student initiatives requires curation and establishment of norms. This is truly an action of inclusion and equity. At our school, the development of the student council has been a multiple-year initiative with recognition of several stages, each taking up to a year or more: 1 - Establishment of the council structure and acknowledgement by the students 2 - Demonstration of consistency and generating trust from the student and staff body 3 - Providing enough autonomy that the council can 'fail' but also become impactful and agential. 4 - Creation of feedback loops from school leadership for student-voice initiatives 5 - Near complete autonomy given and the creation of a self-sustaining council Each step is critical.

In the same way that we really learn to drive after passing the test, when we start a new job, or take on new responsibility, it can take time and experiences to find our way. Having clear expectations; the rules of the road, clarity about where our own ideas fit and consideration for how such fits with others’, is essential. Learners need to be given responsibility, and benefit from guidance about how to frame this. By giving prompts/topics and using developmental language when asking a question like ‘what has helped when you have faced challenges?’ Or providing open sentence starters that encourage learners to use solution focused language e.g. ‘This course would be even better if…’ sets learners up to succeed when sharing their views.

Scaffolding and support appear to carry weight because they will act as a blueprint that will ensure a correct team, better priorities, and in the end, the desired outcome. Students only need guidance, the right feedback, and a lot of encouragement in the process to create a strong leadership initiative that has age-appropriate members with the right agenda.

Our head football coach at Collinsville High School has recently implemented a "leadership council" of players from all grade levels, and so far there results have been encouraging. One of the biggest reasons for success, in my opinion, is that we consistently re-emphasize our "pillars" for the program and task the leadership council with taking responsibility for implementing and monitoring them, creating horizontal accountability. The head coach meets regularly with the leadership council for a variety of reasons, but mostly to provide them support and find out what's working and what's not. It's not enough to expect kids to lead- you have to teach them how!

In fact, it’s the route that my teachers took and later I. My job is a hybrid role. I peer observe classes and have classess dedicated to instructional technology leadership. When an educator is allowed to teach and lead, I believe it brings out the best in education. Teacher leadership is a valuable education path for many teachers. Many teachers are stepping outside of the classroom to help their fellow educators inspire their students through new instructional practices, including Project-Based Learning. So, i think every educator should give it a go.

Communication is vital primarily for each aspect similarly to ensure age appropriate student leadership. Effective communication with students pave way for collaboration as well there by students streamline their enthusiasm in guidance of teachers. Fostering leadership at the right age demands well discussed guidelines done through right communication by teachers resulting into collaboration.

Collaborating and communicating are key to the successful achievement of any initiative, and ensuring that each are modeled appropriately for students is more so. Collaborating and communicating ensures everyone the opportunity to express ideas and to share in the outcome. While oftentimes great achievements are made single-handedly, they are all the better made when in support of and with others.

Communication and collaboration can and should lead to equitable conversations around being student centered and student focused.

The importance of this cannot be understated and current issues being aired and resolved ensures decisions and actions effect the real life in the day to day life of a school. All members of the schools speaking proudly about the successful integration of their initiatives- learning walks with teachers and students, H and S walks with students, student voices with Senior Leadership teams with designated roles, notice boards, on line forums etc all add to inclusive and better school communities.

Collaborating with stakeholders and people outside their comfort zone helps them develop confidence and enhance communication skills. Such interactions also help them get an insight through leaders' perspectives that could help them widen their horizons. There is no better teacher than experience so, sharing thoughts and collaborating helps them to build a clearer vision and future goals.

Age-appropriate is often a limiting term, make your student leadership initiatives appropriate for the specific students and school that you are working with. Though general guidelines from the curriculum and other sources can be helpful, knowing the students and receiving feedback from their subject teachers, can inform where their strengths and areas in need of support are. Within our school student council, we have had grade 7 students in executive positions and grade 11 students receiving targeted guidance and support for each step they took. Support your students, not their labels, and a wonderful student council can be created.

It is also important to keep in mind that these new generations think that with a press of a button things get done. AI is becoming part of our daily lives and students need to learn how and when to use these Apps and we as educators what adjustments do we need to do so that these new Apps will not override the critical thinking we expect from all our students regardless of what age they are at.

A very important consideration is will the student involvement serve the developmental needs of the STUDENT as well as the organizational task you are requesting that they become involved in. Is this work good for the student as well as good for the organization.

Make sure that there are structures in place to allow the students to have agency, meet in committees and share their ideas/suggestions with school leadership. If they don’t see their initiatives have an impact, any student leadership initiative will fail.

By knowing my students, aligning initiatives with curriculum, providing choice and voice, scaffolding and supporting, and promoting collaboration and communication, I create an environment where students thrive as leaders.
