First step is to evaluate risk involve d and decide on correct safety gears. Once all necessary safety gears are onboard, keep engaging and training people who are going to use these gears. Upkeep inventory of these gears to avoid usage resistance. Document/standardise these gears based on usage and follow random audits to have vigilance on safety.

You must have an SOP ( Standard operating procedure for each maintenance activities in which it will be written what are all the resources required to complete this activities safely in a time bound manner. For non-routine works you must have a JSA (Job safety analysis’s report which will be communicated to all the persons doing the activity and get approved from competent person.)

Maintenance Leaders and in fact all leaders who will be visible in the workplace must demonstrate their commitment to safety, by role - modelling. This role modelling includes wearing all mandatory PPE and engaging with maintenance people to recognise their safe behaviours including any specialist or specific PPE for the work tasks.

If you don’t have a site safety officer or committee it’s important to hire a professional. Utilize a consultant if you have to. Being safety compliant should be your number one priority and if you don’t have the professional expertise needed to make those assessments on your payroll you’re in for a world of trouble.

Someone needs to hold their team to a standard. If they don’t properly wear equipment it is useless call them out on it. There needs to be a champion to drive accountability to each member of a crew or team.

Training the staff with Technological alternative would be much better than conventional methods an interactive app with all points like risk assessment,required gear as per scope of work and questionare based smartphone application would be suggested to implement which not only captures the images in step by step manner but also resolves the manual feedback in case accident occurs since the centralized staff can then permit the individual only after this self examination passed by the individuals prior to work get resume.Automate the process over conventional methods.

I always let someone else check my gear behind me. I believe it becomes routine sometimes and things can be missed. 4 eyes are always better than two in any inspection.

I was working as a technical expert in our plant in .... we used steel tubs to make ink. The tubs were cleaned in a giant hot, caustic dish washer. The tubs come out so hot tThe tub cleaning operator pre washed the tubs with solvent for solvent inks and l water for water-based inks. He used a round scrub brush One his left side was a row of used solvent in drums,, on his right side was a row on used water in drums. In the morning I could talk to him fine ,in the , nafternoon he appeared to be impared. He wore a 3m have face dust and solvent absorbing face mask and neoprene safety gloves. On day after he left work I checked his face mask.. Just the dust filter was installed. He got impared on the solvent fumes. Moral personally check PPI

Great points ! However in my experience, regular check up is more than keeping a record, it requires ownership by the inspector. No compromise is allowed . Also in this case zero Tolerance counts

Refer to manufacturers instructions for minimum PPE. Refer to the legislated Regulations. Refer to appropriate Standards. Ask your people for their input of minimum PPE. Finally go through each step of the process to identify ouches and apply an appropriate control measure, AKA protection against the ouches.

Acting several years in that field of inspection and EHS related environment, I recommend a clear training of staff from expierenced colleagues and make an use of the technology and innovation provided by few suppliers in the market. It might be important to establish a habit of using and wearing protective equipment. Having a check-in station where the gear is stored, regularly inspected and where new equipment can be issued may create a habitual application of safety practices. Safety procedures can be posted there and manuals also for reference. The military issues equipment based upon individual roles within a unit, so taking the mindset of establishing what equipment is useful for individual site roles can be beneficial in the analysis and supply of the correct tools.
