First and foremost, hiring an identity leader with advisory experience is a must. Picking up someone internally assuming an identity role would be a recipe for disaster. The next immediate step is to define and well document the use cases. Then buy a technology to support automation. Technology should not be a solution to achieve IAM goals, the process is.

To properly define goals, you’ll need an excellent understanding of the current state. What’s going well? What needs a complete overhaul? What’s the state of IAM at an organizational level? How much education for the business lines needs to happen? (Spoiler: a lot of continuous education.) Without this holistic view of current state, there’s a huge gap between any vision one could create for “end state” and “right now.” And taking a step into that gap is painful.

When we manually handle access, HR files ticket for every app per new hire. IT then needs to check requirements and configure permissions one by one across all systems - very time consuming! It's also easy for human errors like giving too much access. Offboarding is just as tough trying to revoke credentials spread everywhere. Instead, automated IAM centralizes identity management using predefined roles like Engineer, Auditor that align app access to jobs. Systems then automatically apply correct access when workers join, switch roles or leave. Unifying identity processes programmatically slashes manual labor by interpreting access needs automatically. Automation provides accountable, auditable cross-platform authorization at scale.
