This will allow face-to-face (albeit digital) teaching and mentoring (via Zoom, Teams, etc), which in my opinion makes a huge difference to the learning experience, being able to 'see' each other. These applications can also allow break-out sessions, a good way for students to brainstorm, share ideas and generally get to know each other and build a community. LMS systems should be kept simple. Lectures can be recorded (or pre-recorded), to allow students to review material covered. Reading lists and instructional videos should be provided as appropriate.

To provide online learning for students in rural areas, I think the first thing to do will be to ensure students have access to a learning device, it doesn't necessarily have to be a phone, it could be coming up with a new innovation like a mini phone, just for learning which will also provide them with access to Internet. OR we could go to the rural community and source for a conducive learning location, with good Internet access and set up an online learning platform there, that way students can attend such places like a school.

The greatest challenge. There are many a places which still haven’t developed and are still awaiting technology upgradation. Thus one needs to empathise and work around the limitations.

In my experience I have learned that when it comes to communicating requirements and expectations in an online course, the obvious needs to be said and repeated. We published a course of programming language and a student understood that he could perform the entire course on mobile phone. Although it was an IT course, the need to use a computer to program was not clear. To ensure the high quality of the course for rural area students, make sure that the necessary technical requirements and learning objectives are evident.

Communication is to active learning. Clear and concise instruction would go a long way in fostering learning at all levels of the learners im the rural areas. Instruction should be intentionally given to improve the learners critical thinking and problem-solving skills and communicate effectively.

In my experience, the most significant change in participant behavior in online learning depends on instructors who can establish rapport. Instructors who make them feel that they are there for them with their body language, facial expressions and voice can overcome any obstacle, whether face to face or online.

I can add about communication. Humans are not that great communicating effectively from a distance. Even passionate relationships fall apart if communication is not effective especially when you not in close proximity. Regular communication is the only key. But how do you make it not spamy? ?? Ability to strike a task daily to create a rythem. ????keeping in touch via other digital channels like social media and chats are very useful.

In my experience, the rural students, most of them are tech savvy alike urban students. Their learning aptitude and willingness is quite high. If the instructor designs engaging content and activities to support the learning outcomes, the students will be able to connect, relate and grasp faster. Engaging tools and activities which I have used are gamification, online group exercises, break-up room discussion and fun activities such as one minute game.

Getting people in rural environment interested in online learning could mean carrying out research about the environment, know the things that catch their attention and use it as a bait or incentives for people who would attend the classes. Also engaging in activities that wouldn't bore them, coming down to their level in explaining courses to them, using more relatable visuals to them or their environment or community. Relating knowledge to their immediate environment would also go a long way.

In my experience, the best way is to have a designated person in the area to check in with the students. I am all for distant learning and using technology in a learning environment, but at the same time we can not ignore different learning modalities and their impact on students learning progress. The parents or older students can play the role of a mentor and communicate with the students on a weekly basis and know more about their needs.

Not being able to relate and understand the social and emotional needs is one of the biggest reason global brands couldn’t penetrate the rural markets. Just the opposite is the solution. But not easy. In my experience the best way to achieve is by working cloy with local leaders/ influencers. In rural areas communities are more stronger that any other motivation. 3 years ago, I had a student try to upload a video she made for an assignment. It took a few days for her to be able to upload the assignment - she needed ideal weather for her internet to handle uploading the video. You need to think about bandwidth and internet connectivity. Not all students will have the strongest internet connections. If you're creating lecture videos, keep them short, so that they're easier to access with limited internet, and make them downloadable, so that students can view them while offline. Rely on engaging asynchronous activities rather than synchronous video conferencing sessions. All students benefit from the flexibility of activities they can complete at any time rather than a fixed time.

Many of Rural immunities do not have access to internet, therefore we need to make sure learning is happening with tools that are resourceful and sustainable. I wish we can discuss this point more than focussing on online resources
