I'm not an electrician and how I've learned about standard electrical systems probably isn't standard. But one of the best lessons I have ever learned about electricity was while removing some shop heaters. We couldn't figure out which breaker they were on so I got assigned to work to disconnect them hot and trace them back to the panel. I got the one traced back to a junction box and I was up on my fiber glass ladder disconnecting the wires from each bundle. When the 16 gauge wire strippers on the inside of my klein electrician pliers pierced the hot line and grounded on the side of the box. BOOM 240v at 30amps just about took me off my ladder and melted the strippers off of my pliers. Electricity happens fast.

After all is said, earth resistance should be checked periodically to ensure that it is within required range, if the earthing system is to be relied upon for protection. Specified NEC range of less than 25 ohms should be checked. Adequate earthing is to be done and which is dependent on equipment size and sensitivity, and which is bonded to ground to ensure proper protection of equipment and personnel.
