I think one of the more interesting issues to address is that many executives, though they understand what’s needed in their areas of responsibility, do not understand how their success directly contributes to the financial success of the firm. Most are exposed to finance only during budgeting, Capex decisions, or M&A. P&L owners see most of the P&L. However, few executives understand how their actions contribute to the efficiency of the balance sheet or cash flow (especially in large firms). It is therefore important to highlight to executives which areas of the key three financial statements are directly affected by their actions and to tie the improvements to the three statements to value creation, thus directly linking action to impact.
