How can you ensure effective communication between remote team members in Agile engineering teams?

For virtual agile teams it's important that they connect daily for 15 minutes in Daily Scrum meeting to ensure that the work is going as per the plan and if there is any impediment / roadblock, it's tackled quickly. The team should use the video to improve the communication. It's important to understand that everyone in the team has equal voice and everyone is expected to get fully engaged and be in the moment to be most efficient. They should also utilize asynchronous mode of communication like Team's chat, Skype, Zoom, email etc to stay on the top of the trivial items.

Utilizing communication platforms such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, or Zoom for video conferencing and virtual meetings is crucial to ensure seamless connection, information sharing, and collaboration despite geographical barriers. Furthermore, adopting Agile project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana is imperative to organize tasks, monitor progress, and streamline workflows efficiently. Visualizing work in progress and prioritizing tasks through virtual Kanban boards is essential for identifying bottlenecks and maintaining productivity. Utilizing cloud-based document platforms such as Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, or Dropbox is a non-negotiable way to store and share project documentation and relevant resources.

The first step is to establish work agreements that define how team members interact with each other to plan, set, and achieve common goals. A healthy development culture with accountability is essential for remote Agile teams. Since in-person daily stand-up meetings are not possible, tools such as Slack, Ms Teams, etc can be used to support communication between team members. Clearly defining collaborative communication channels is vital for remote Agile teams. Agile prioritizes fluent, effective team communication to build products that meet clients needs and expectations.

En mi experiencia esa relación amor odio entre comercial, operaciones y tecnología no va a ningún lado, lo que si tiene sentido es comunicar, comunicar y comunicar principalmente aquello donde se requiere ayuda, hay riesgo de impacto económico o reputacional, Ingeniería debe tener muy claro su rol, el alcance de su requerimiento, evitar cambios y cambios y distracciones, el check in debe ser fluido y mostrar avances o levantar preocupaciones, no cambios, no excusas ni nada, es la mejor forma de avanzar y seguir actividades

Tools like Jira is very much effective in tracking various task details. Eventhough if we are leave on a particular day,our manager/ team leads will be able to verify our task details and can track on our current status.We can also add improvement tasks/some other tasks which need not be done on an immediate basis in the backlogs so that we will be reminded of the same and can take it up whenever we have bandwidth.

Define when to meet and What communication channels to use for different types of communication. Promote Asynchronous colloboration. Ensure meetings have Agenda and time box meetings. Implement no meeting days and dedicated focus time to reduce meeting fatigue.

Keeping connection with remote employees might be tricky given the fact you have to hold a balance between the meetings/syncs frequency, not exaggerating their relevance, and the need to be in touch to stay informed about all work & non-work related topics, identify issues early and act proactively under changing environment.

Los equipos deben saber que comunicarse es primordial y que es bastante sencillo establecer los canales, las reglas y formas y temas a comunicar así como los tópicos a tratar pues de nuevo, Ingeniería debe dedicarse a lo que mejor sabe "Hacer ingeniería" y aunque tampoco se trata de dejarlos incomunicados, estarles pidiendo cosas al vuelo, cambiar requerimientos o quitarles tiempo con reuniones innecesarias, perjudica a los proyectos

El hecho de establecer reuniones con cierta periodicidad que fomenten la inclusión de todos los integrantes del equipo es clave para fijar los objetivos sobre los que trabajar. Coordina las diferentes localizaciones de tu equipo en caso de que esté trabajando de forma deslocalizada con herramientas online y con horarios que encajen en todos los husos horarios que tengáis. Utiliza herramientas de edición de contenidos online que permitan trabajar a multiples usuarios a la vez y así compartir conocimiento y establece pautas claras de compartir y explicar este contexto en sesiones de checkpoint.

Si me preguntan, yo siempre pido que me incluyan sólo en aquellas reuniones donde puedo y debo aportar pero donde además se tomará en cuenta mi aportación, también respetar el tiempo y tener una agenda es clave ya que si se empiezan a tocar otros temas o se alarga más de la cuenta la sesión, ambas cosas son motivo suficiente para perder el foco y la atención perdiendo mermando la productividad de la sesión

Sé cercano y establece relaciones de confianza para que los integrantes del equipo, ya sean junior o senior dentro del ámbito de trabajo..., no tengan ningún reparo en contarte y compartirte sus necesidades e inquietudes. El liderazgo moderno y cercano, que se caracteriza por una alta flexibilidad es el que funciona en los equipos de alto rendimiento.
