How can you ensure the durability and availability of your cloud storage?

In my experience, tiering storage is an effective way to balance between durability and availability. For instance, using AWS S3 intelligent tiering you can set up policies to have infrequently accessed data moved from warm to cold storage options. You can also use specific storage options depending on the payload to be stored and factors, such as, latency between access as well as the frequency of success. Finally, data residency laws are critical to consider as they inform the storage options to ensure compliance. Overall, there are technical and non-technical considerations when making storage decisions which in turn define the core metrics that will define redundancy, scalability, compatibility, and compliance objectives.

Local Storage: Fast and low-latency storage directly attached to a device or server. Cloud Storage: Remote storage services provided by cloud providers like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud for scalability and accessibility. Network-Attached Storage (NAS): Dedicated file-level storage devices that can be accessed by multiple users or systems over a network. Distributed Databases: Utilize distributed storage systems like Hadoop HDFS or distributed NoSQL databases for big data and fault tolerance.

Replication involves creating duplicate copies of data in real-time for high availability, load balancing, and fault tolerance. It ensures data redundancy by maintaining synchronized copies across multiple servers or locations. Backup is the process of regularly archiving data to a separate storage medium or location to safeguard against data loss due to accidents, corruption, or disasters. It provides a historical record of data that can be restored when needed. Combining replication and backup strategies enhances data resilience, with replication ensuring real-time availability and backup serving as a safety net for data recovery in case of unexpected events, such as hardware failures or data corruption.

Encryption secures data by converting it into unreadable ciphertext using algorithms and keys, ensuring confidentiality during storage and transmission. Access control restricts data access to authorized users, enforcing permissions based on roles, privileges, or policies, thus preventing unauthorized users from viewing or modifying sensitive information. My favourite approach to ensure durability and availability in the cloud is by chaos testing. The goal is to deliberately introduce faults that simulate real-world outages - and investigate how your infrastructure is positioned to handle the errors. After the simulation is complete, you should review what went wrong, and adapt. AWS introduced this as a feature as early as 2020, and Azure - officially, as recently as 2023.
