i would disagree with a cost based method of deriving your rates. Yes, of course one needs to cover costs, but a better approach would be based on the value you are bringing to the clients.

When I was self-employed for years, I did not correctly calculate these hidden (fixed and variable costs). I often have neglected them, but this is the starting point of determining the pricing (which model we choose: time, project, retainer, and outcome-based).
