A former PM colleague often said, "If you think you're communicating too much, you're probably wrong." Agile requires self-management and for it to work for distributed teams, each member needs to agree to - and abide by - the communication approach.

To make sure that agile methods are followed in a distributed team, selecting the appropriate framework is crucial. For instance, Scrum divides work into smaller tasks called "sprints" and involves regular meetings, known as "stand-ups," where team members discuss progress and obstacles. Similarly, Kanban visualizes workflow through a board with columns representing different stages of work, facilitating transparency and collaboration. By adopting such frameworks, distributed teams can effectively coordinate their efforts, maintain communication, and adapt to changes swiftly, all essential aspects of agile methodology.

Before choosing a framework, leaders must embrace an "agile mindset", committing to the principles and values that supersede any specific framework or methodology. Without the right mindset, the team will be "doing agile" without truly "being agile", and even if the distributed teams follow the chosen framework to the letter, the larger team won't realize the benefits of agility. With the right mindset modeled from the top down, teams are empowered to embrace the interactions required to be successful, to expect and respond to the changes that will inevitably come, and ultimately to focus on delivering valuable outcomes. Only at that point should you even attempt to choose a framework that works for your team.

Daily Check-Ins: Mandatory daily stand-ups via video to maintain team cohesion. 3. The concept of self-organization only works in limited situations and only when a team is mature and has a long history of working together and has lots of cross-functional expertise. Roles can be assigned to teams instead of individuals, so the team leader can hot swap in their available team members. Most of the time, you should make deliberate recruiting decisions and have clearly define swim lanes for each role.

The entire point of agility is to "uncover better ways...", i.e. innovating. Innovation can't be predicted so responsibilities have to change, the teams can't have static roles to cover everything the team has to do since they don't know what is going to be needed beforehand, and predictable deliveries is a fallacy. If everything was predictable agility wouldn't be needed. Some structure is of course needed but for teams to be successful they have to realize that they have to be prepared for uncertainty, volatility, complexity and ambiguity. Product development is not a plannable factory setup, it's a learning process about needs, what solutions that meets those needs, and how to best collaborate to build these solution.

Begin by defining the team structure, ensuring that each member understands their role, whether it be as a product owner, scrum master, or team member, and how they contribute to the project's goals. Clarify expectations for each role.Provide comprehensive training and ongoing support to help team members understand their roles within the agile framework and address any challenges that arise. Encourage a culture of feedback and adaptation, soliciting input from team members to continually improve role clarity and effectiveness as the project progresses.

Regularly discussing our roles and responsibilities and supporting each other in fulfilling them can help us continue to work effectively as an Agile team.

Once the specific needs are identified, select appropriate tools that facilitate remote agile workflows, such as video conferencing platforms, collaborative document sharing, and agile project management software tailored for distributed teams. In my experience people have been repeating the mistakes of the 80's and 90's when they created many point to point integrations. This lead to the common statement that most companies end up having spaghetti junctions as their integration landscape and also a very complex data flow that was increasingly difficult to manage and operate. Reason why this originated the advent of EAI! Now when people started approaching the automation of their application Release Management (be it for Agile, DevOps or CI/CD) they are falling in the same pitfall by choosing a disparate set of tools that also need integrating creating a new spaghetti mess of scripts. This should be approached with a platform and not a set of tools.

Leading teams to build trust (whether you are in a "formal" leadership role or just a member of the team) is challenging and absolutely necessary. It starts with vulnerability, demonstrating a commitment to trusting others on the team and allowing them to trust you. Trust is built when there is something to lose, and one person supports another through it. Face-to-face, in-person time is helpful and makes forming and developing a team easier, but it's definitely not the only way to build trust and rapport. The key is the commitment to transparency and frequency of communication.

I miss the inspect and adapt part of an individual, not just in frameworks like Scrum and Kanban, but also here. How do we ensure, that each individual get the right support for individual growth, specially in distributed team?

This might involve revisiting our processes, exploring new collaboration tools, or adjusting our communication strategies to better align with our remote work setting. Regularly reviewing and reflecting on our processes, seeking feedback, and implementing improvements can help us enhance our efficiency, productivity, and overall performance as a team.

Using agile methodologies with remote teams is not inherently disadvantageous. When managed well, they can actually be more productive than teams located in a single time zone because work can follow the sun. It is vital to cultivate an inclusive environment that is respectful of and celebrates diversity of all kinds. In addition to cultural sensitivity, you need to adapt to differences in communication styles, work habits, and work-life balance preferences. When leaders prioritize their teams' well-being and mental health, they will be rewarded with motivated, dedicated team members who will go above and beyond for the sake of their projects.

"How to ensure Agile methods are followed" is the wrong question to start with. Should your mindset be, that you need to ensure anything here, you are already on the wrong path. "Ensure" by keeping your approaches - agile or not - adaptable, with visible and good results, be clear on what those results should be, and get out of the way of your colleagues.

Agile methods will be used if they solve a problem already exists. If you just introduce an agile method for some reason, you will fail or at least do not get a flying initiative.
