The very first rule of optimal outsourcing is knowing what you want. I've outsourced and successfully completed 50+ projects, and also failed a lot. 5 Major Lessons / Tips in Outsourcing ID with respect to your needs a) Understand the type of requirement - fixed, agile b) Budget Constraints - see what works for you in terms of amount and cashflow c) Diverse Skillset - you can't hire everyone in-house or a one-person IT team, figure out all the skill set required and make a plan d) Time Constraints - how soon do you want it, determines how you want to outsource e) Capability Assessment - all above questions will let you measure the required capability of the outsourcing teams. One of the most critical skills for IT outsourcing is the ability to select the right vendor that can meet your needs and align with your vision and values. Choosing the right vendor is important. There have been many times we got screwed over. Some of the points to keep in mind while choosing and engaging vendors 1. Communication Skills - no matter tech skill set, see how well they communicate 2. Technical Skillset - don't just trust the portfolio, try to review the codebase, try with tasks 3. Payment Terms - beware of those teams who get money first and work later, it's fine if they excel in all other aspects but keep it flexible and hybrid 4. Flexibility - assess how well the teams handle change; IT means constantly changing needs, and they have to be flexible with accepting, provided we also pay them! 5. Compliance - Always sign agreements, NDAs and all necessary security documents!

Once you have chosen the vendor, you need to manage the project effectively and efficiently. You need to have a clear project plan that outlines the objectives, deliverables, timelines, milestones, roles, and responsibilities of both parties. Post engaging vendors, having a seamless workflow with them is extremely important. The only major thing I always suggest is be like "Water on a Lotus Leaf" - involved but not too involved. Micromanaging may end up leading to a poor delivery and at the same time not managing will lead to a disaster. A middle-ground process of ensuring weekly reports, demos, reviews or even sometime 10-min catchup every day helps to know if they are on track for the delivery. Having an integrated PMS with the vendors also help in tracking asynchronously through the system!

Communication with the vendor is crucial. You cannot purchase a service and let them do everything. They provide a critical service and you need to treat them as a part of your business as much as they need to treat you as an employer. Being in regular contact is important. You need to understand how their business works, how the people work, and respect how they do business. You also need them to understand all of that about your business. This allows both companies to understand each other and coordinate properly, communicate properly, and solve problems effectively when they arise. Do not underestimate the importance of networking with people you may have never met in person.

6 Learn and improve

The final skill for IT outsourcing is the ability to learn and improve from the outsourcing experience. You need to evaluate the results and outcomes of the outsourcing project and identify the strengths and weaknesses of both parties.
