How can you enhance your organization's BIM capability?

1- First of all you should know exactly what you hope to achieve with BIM. 2- BIM implementation is more than just software so you should know exactly what to expect from your team and what is expected of each stakeholder to save time and money. 3- Staying up to date with the latest version to achieve the maximum benefit. 4- Try to learn BIM ftom exeperts to save time and money.

Getting your co-workers and stakeholders to understand and use BIM in their work is the best way for a Project Manager/Project Head to improve the capability of your organization by implementing the right BIM processes, collaborating with BIM experts, and investing in advanced BIM software and tools.

To enhance your organization's building information capability, consider the following steps: Identify your organization's specific information needs related to buildings, such as project management, maintenance, facilities management, or energy efficiency. BIM can help you centralize and standardize building data, improve collaboration, and track project progress more efficiently. Implement a data management strategy to ensure accurate and up-to-date building information.Train your employees on the chosen BIM software and any other tools or systems being introduced. Encourage cross-departmental collaboration and communication to ensure that building information is shared effectively across teams.

Enhancing organization's BIM capability is not just a one-time process. In fact it is a continuous process of progress. You can follow various workflows but as per my understanding, the following steps will be helpful. 1. Understand BIM and its capabilities. 2. Learn and upskill yourself and your team with the latest tools, technologies, and processes to enhance your BIM capabilities. 3. Once you have enough skills to execute a BIM project, understand thoroughly the scope of work, the project requirements, and the client's expectations 4. Implement the correct strategy to execute each construction project as each project are different from the other so it is necessary to strategize a proper BIM Execution Plan (BEP).

Generally I agree with this step, however I also believe it also requires a deep understanding of the desired end product, process mapping of your workflow, and deriving to a more defined set of variables that can alter per project. This can be very helpful with parallel task automation, setting parameters, ultimately making your projects flexible to adaptations as they occur. I believe time invested looking into these concepts will help better define your BIM needs, level of maturity, readiness, and ultimately expand capabilities.

Another thing to consider, is providing a survey to employees, clients, steak holders, partners, etc. It would be wise to diversify the types of questions oriented towards your goals, but data from multiple minds can go a long ways!

1) Have a clear vision of what you hope to achieve with BIM, 2) Identify the key stakeholders who will need to be involved in implementing that strategy, and 3) Set measurable metrics that can help you track success.

BIM is a very useful tool: - Provided all the Stakeholders inputs are properly & successfully incorporated in the design phase with enough leeway for further incorporation or de-scoping. - Provided there is a clear unselfish collaboration towards the common goal from all the domain experts / specialists inputs into shop / design drawings during the design stage or construction stage. - All the above are of-course without undoubtedly a clear & common BIM platform & expertise for all the domain expertise.This should be with a clear objective to streamline all phases of Construction, i.e., EPC. - Otherwise BIM is just an other white elephant without any real purpose.

I agree with this 100%, and would just add three supporting thought: 1) Invest in your learning material. I personally have purchased books I believe that will help me learn the overall program more, and the more knowledge of capabilities you have, the more you can do. 2) Research and explore existing add-in tools as well as testing out free trials. This will help expand capabilities, as well as force you to learn how other systems work. Potentially together too. 3) I personally prioritize organization and intelligence accessibility. From better organization in file structure, to pre-setup project folders, to shared knowledge with resources like OneNote. If you utilize these tools properly, this can make everything easier and better.

Additionally, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development is crucial for successfully implementing BIM. Investing in relevant certifications like Autodesk Certified Professional or Building Performance Analysis Certification can validate their expertise and enhance their credibility. Collaborating with external experts and consultants who possess specialized BIM knowledge can bring fresh perspectives and guidance to your organization. By proactively addressing skill gaps and nurturing a learning environment, you can ensure that your team is equipped to effectively utilize BIM tools and techniques, resulting in improved project outcomes and increased competitiveness.

In my past role, we pinpointed our team's gaps, got hands-on training, and even teamed up with outside experts. It's all about constant learning and keeping up with BIM's fast-paced world.

With the recent advancements in sensor technology, it is possible to obtain accurate data about the changes during the project (for example interior temperature and humidity or location of materials and machinery) and update BIM models in realtime. This will help with making more efficient decisions and accelerate project schedules.

Only thing I can think to add is to keep your processes simple enough to adapt easily, but smart enough to utilize future available technology applications. Currently exploring the use of PowerBI with BIM to extract useful data long term.

Choosing the right BIM tools made all the difference. We didn't just go for the popular ones; we picked what truly fit our goals and budget. Making sure everything worked smoothly together and kept our data safe was key. Regular checks and updates? A must. Keep BIM tools sharp and aligned.

Strong communication and a well defined chain of commands is crucial here. Don’t want to have too many chiefs in a meeting making multiple complex decisions, but also don’t want to make the exchange of ideas too far down the line they don’t make their way up properly. Ultimately this will involve employer support and input, but the more parallel and defined the leadership is, I believe the more it will help long term. Prioritize people who are go-getters and passionate. They make things happen!

Make BIM fun, use cool tools like virtual reality, collaborate with local universities to ensure that they are teaching the latest BIM tools and techniques, create beautiful renders of your completed projects and hang them everywhere around the office, share success stories internally and externally, and get involved with your local buildingSMART chapter!

In my past projects, open dialogue with stakeholders was the backbone of our BIM success. Regularly sharing our vision and listening to theirs forged trust. Syncing our processes minimized hiccups. Also, networking with other BIM enthusiasts gave us fresh perspectives.

Clear understanding of BIM concept eludes under the hips of general assertions. Without demonstration of practical scheme, coupled with real life experience of BIM incorporation in the sample organization, all talks regarding BIM implementation into construction industry would remain just talks.

You can benchmark your BIM capability for your organization as per ISO 19650 series or the PAS 1192 series. The conclusion is in the following points. 1-The company must have sufficient resources to implement BIM demand 2-The company must have a standard process for evaluating BIM capability 3-The company must have sufficient BIM experience 4-The company must have official standard contracts and agreements for BIM 5-The company must have the necessary infrastructure (software and hardware) to implement BIM 6-The company must have provided an example with rich BIM data 7-The company should provide a good cost structure 8-The company should provide an attitude toward new technology 9-Staff receive guidance and supervision from BIM experts
