In terms of risk assessment there's a need to: Identify Assets by Listing all hardware, software, data, and network components that need protection. Then Identify potential threats such as cyber-attacks, data breaches, insider threats, and natural disasters. Also Identify Vulnerabilities i.e Determine weaknesses in your system that could be exploited by threats. There's a need to also assess potential Impact of each threat on your assets. Lastly Evaluate the likelihood of each threat occurring.

You need to identify critical assets and potential threats, evaluating vulnerabilities like outdated software or weak passwords and understanding the impact of various cyber threats. Once you have a clear picture of your risk landscape, you can prioritize security measures to protect the most sensitive areas first. Additionally, risk assessment should be an ongoing process to adapt to evolving threats and emerging vulnerabilities. Regular updates and involving stakeholders across the organization can enhance security by providing diverse insights and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Top priority is backup with a BCP plan. Without backups, an organization’s data is at significant risk, as no technology alone can ensure data safety. In addition to AD policies, organisations also need to incorporate NAC solutions. With it we can control access to the company network. A machine will only be able to connect once it complies with all set policies, otherwise access will be denied. Training is important but we should focus on security awareness. There is a difference between training and awareness. Training is something which is delivered by a trainer with good intentions but it is up to the participants to focus on it or not. However, security awareness is something where we people change their behaviours and that is what makes the real difference.

User education is a vital often missing link. My rule of email: if you don't need it, don't read it, delete it. Do NOT open unknown links or PDF files ever. Question everything. Apart from these things, organisations should implement a least privilege policy, a zero trust architecture, and focus on user awareness with the help of a simulation-based approach.

Additionally, it ensures that your entire operations team is aligned when addressing security incidents. Equally important is including a “lessons learned” step after investigating and closing out incidents, and properly documenting this in the organization’s knowledge base.

Zero Trust Architecture Least Privilege Principle: Implement a zero trust architecture where every access request is verified, and users have the least privilege necessary to perform their tasks. Micro-Segmentation: Apply micro-segmentation to control access within the network based on the principle of least privilege.

The security operations team needs to proactively do: 1. Validation of users and admins on a regular basis. Audit is not enough. 2. Validation of sensitive resources. 3. Refining network access policies to make sure unauthorised access is prevented. 4. Deploying leading cloud proxy solutions to make sure granular level monitoring can be done of the user activities. 5. Having a good approval matrix to ensure good visibility and control of activities.
