How can you engage youth in climate change mitigation?

We older folks should recognize that many youth genuine rightly feel we are robbing them of a peaceful future. We are endangering them and exposing them to climate chaos, for the sake of short term financial gain. As we trigger a mass extinction, and smash through what Johan Rockstr?m calls our planetary boundaries, older world leaders are putting children and youth's future at risk. There isn't enough awareness and acknowledgement, that older people are almost waging a world war on babies, children, and youth. Our actions today ensure young people will not have clean air, clean water, functioning ecosystems, healthy crops, stable societies. A greater level of honesty is needed, and more recognition of the harms that are being done.

Speaking theoretically, in Tanzania, where I work, I would say you need to make climate mitigation the result of a new and profitable livelihood that young people can adopt. Young people here need jobs beyond agriculture or more profitable and stable forms of agriculture (permaculture / arboriculture). Provide youths with training and support in a diversity of new livelihoods that produce a marketable product (biochar, fruits, nuts, etc), link them to those markets and link them to carbon offset and removal markets to add income to the livelihood. The youth will get a marketable, new livelihood and the added carbon income (mitigation). Easier said than done, but with the expansion of carbon markets in recent years it is worth piloting.

In my work with youth on climate change mitigation, I have found that the most effective way to engage them is to: 1. Start by listening to youth. What are their concerns about climate change? What are their ideas for solutions? 2. Empower youth to take action. Provide them with the resources and support they need to make a difference. 3. Celebrate youth successes. When youth take action on climate change, it is important to celebrate their achievements. This will help to motivate them to continue their work. I believe that youth have the power to change the world. By engaging them in climate change mitigation, we can help to create a more sustainable future for all.

Where it comes to the climate emergency, I would argue that young people are already the most engaged of all generations. Perhaps the question should be how we *listen* to young people, rather than how we engage them?

Engaging youth in climate change mitigation effectively involves recognizing their awareness and addressing their perception of being unheard by political leaders. True engagement means actively listening to their ideas, implementing these with transparent mechanisms for tracking progress, outcomes, and evaluations. Emphasizing the importance of making young activists' stories known, promoting their visibility in media, and encouraging their participation in student forums is crucial. This not only empowers them but also serves as inspiration for their peers, creating a momentum of involvement and change driven by the youth themselves.

Facilitating youth engagement necessitates a strategic alignment with personal value-beliefs systems, cogently linked to the goal. Concerning climate change, the internalisation of the agency belief within the planetary framework may result in behavioural shifts catalysed by sentiments of culpability or, better, responsibility. Leveraging insights from neuroscience, the efficacy of engagement is heightened when individuals identify with a collective ethos or movement, deriving satisfaction from active participation and receiving affirmative validation. Given the foundational role of values in influencing behaviour through the personal sense-making scaffolding they create, engaging younger generations in environmental stewardship is crucial.

Teach them the true nature of energy in all forms. Teach them to search for multiple sources of information in order to avoid politics and disinformation. Help them to seek balance in the discussion around climate and find equitable solutions, not politically motivated battles between socialists and capitalists.

An example I've seen is the diversification of participation such as groups, activities, competition, and activities where their research capacity and intellectual contribution are constantly challenged, such as research aimed at practice. actions that not only benefit the community and future generations, but also inspire due to their content

Empower them to spearhead projects, make decisions, and voice their opinions on environmental issues. Education and Awareness: Offer comprehensive education on climate change, its causes, impacts, and potential solutions. F Accessible Platforms: Create accessible platforms for youth participation, such as youth-led organizations, clubs, or online forums. Ensure inclusivity by welcoming diverse perspectives and backgrounds. Technology and Social Media: Harness the power of technology and social media to reach and engage youth effectively.

Reshaping a value system brings ethical challenges. It is important to ensure that behaviours remain align with scientific principles, transcending dogma, albeit acknowledging the role spirituality may play in fostering progress. Initiatives must also safeguard against undue centralised influence. Fostering empathy is important to avoid the spectre of discordant dissent and societal upheaval. Achieving this entails realigning food provision systems to prioritise community-level food security as well as reducing wealth inequality at national level. The prospect of a promising future may reside in adopting a model of local environmental stewardship, drawing inspiration from the practices of indigenous communities.
