How can you engage in philanthropy as a nonprofit board member?

Certainly, charity should start at home. Board members should give to the charity where they serve; not just of their time and talents, but of their finances as well. Bringing in corporate sponsorships and larger donors should also be a responsibility of a board member. Forming strategic alliances, participating in events, and overall evangelizing your organization should all be done by active board members.

First of all, understand that fundraising is a big part of your job as a board member. If you are not comfortable with asking, then partner up with staff or other board members. If you don't know anyone, offer to do some research. Or go out and meet people.

Trust the staff to guide you, respond to their emails and outreach, follow through, learn. Speak about the organization's mission with passion and authenticity. Bring folks to events. Introduce staff to people who might want to engage. Work with staff to build a dashboard so that once strategic goals are set, there is an easy and clear tool to know how it's going. And do the personal work that we all need to do so you're bringing your best self and not recreating toxic attitudes and behaviors.

Find your passion and put your time there. 2. Talent- Do you have great skills, talents or knowledge that your non-profit organization needs to pay for? There is a lot more to being a board member than just being a good donor. Never forget that you have a statutory duty to provide good governance and a fiduciary duty to the organization and its stakeholders. You should be ready to give time and effort to the board as well as money to the cause.

As a member of the board it is also imperative that you support and onboard your ED. There is nothing worse than hiring an ED and leaving them to address complex issues without the board. While daily operations should be the responsibility of the ED. A board should never sacrifice an ED and leave them out on a limb alone.

I agree, Shirley. A board member's volunteered time and expertise are not enough. Board members must help give the organization's fund developer tools to raise the dollars needed. And one of the best tools is the ability to honestly say, "Each member of our board gives money to help grow and support our cause."
