How can you end a coaching relationship respectfully?

Coaching to me can be likened to the college experience - we enroll in courses, are challenged by them, receive appropriate guidance, then pass a midterm and final exam before we move on from the course and instructor. Highlighting successes and identifying challenges to be met along the way are vital to demonstrating achievements and value. Otherwise, how would we know we’re ready to face bigger challenges? After the figurative coaching midterm is likely the most promising time to gradually connect over closure because, by this given design, we would no longer be at the early part of the contract. We must come to terms with the fact that we can’t solve every problem but can certainly prioritize major pain points per term.

All relationships are not the same. I agree - the best way to end a transactional coaching relationship is to have a clear start and a clear end date from the very beginning. It should be filled with the usual measurement metrics of incremental goals and objectives met that are clear and concise. But for one-on-one value-based consulting, the goal is different especially if you're in a good relationship. So, how do you end a good relationship? I think it's the job of any good service provider to never end the relationship. I personally always believe in setting a bounded number of sessions so that the client can choose to stay, rather than feel forced to leave.

Remind your coachee of the approaching end of the coaching contract and collaborate on the format, date, and agenda of the final session to ensure a smooth and impactful closure. In my experience following up within a strict timeline is very important and effective at ensuring the people you coach do actually succeed after working with you. What I do in every last session with a coachee is to give him/her objective ways of measuring their efforts and performance in terms of how they are applying the newly acquired skills and strategies. And my job as the coach is to set the follow up timelines and make sure I follow up to check their progress. Sometimes the coachee may be making small mistakes post coaching so a follow up will definitely help to realign them so they do not deviate from the agreed plan. All in all, following up is just good customer service and your clients will appreciate you for it.

Then follow up by providing a feedback re what shall be improved from each side to potentially restore the coaching partnership.
