In my experience the positional power creates a barrier for hindering this desire to speak up and be heard. One in a leadership role would be wise to become self aware of their own actions and tonality in how they communicate. Moving forward aware of this consider the humanness of others and the power they possess to share intelligently. One is being watched and the actions are often mirrored by the words along with the tonality of them. Follow through weights the time spent to hear the team who speaks to share in bettering others. It costs nothing to speak authentically in acknowledging their contributions. The delta between the perceived line in powers will eventually shrink and strengthen others to see they can speak and be heard.

In my personal experience of handling teams of different sizes from few years , the principles of EQ are really important. You need to show empathy towards people, and have open talks with them about their growth and concerns. As a leader be humble and make sure your team doesn’t think as you have positional powers and you are difficult to reach. Treat your team as you are their mentor.

Everyone has different nature & previous workplace environments also play major roll in this. Point 1: Share different task for individuals & ask their opinion to make it more accessible or creative in term of task. In my experience,In order to encourage team members to speak up, practice humility. Be willing to hear other perspectives and be willing to try suggestions made by team members. When members of the team see this,it will encourage more ideas and solutions. If the suggestions do not bring the forth desired results at the time, thank the members for their contribution as it was a learning experience. I’m always honest with everyone on the team. This honesty and transparency builds trust. I show emotion and care towards everyone. For example, we had a team member struggling to know their passion. We supported them in a transition that was in the best interest of their life and well being. We find most conflict stems from miscommunication because everyone is coming at a situation from a good grounded place. We truly care about each other and it shows.

Encourage anyone / everyone to do and give it a go, whilst letting them know they have support when and if needed but they have a free run at it. Giving them a spot on the stage to do everything can bring tremendous results and benefit not only the immediate team but the company as a whole.
