One of the first steps to encourage sustainable behavior is to educate and communicate with your facility occupants about the benefits and importance of sustainability for the organization, the community, and the planet. You can use various channels and methods to raise awareness and inform your occupants about the sustainability goals, policies, and initiatives of your facility, such as newsletters, posters, flyers, webinars, workshops, or campaigns. You can also provide feedback and recognition to your occupants for their sustainable actions and achievements, such as energy savings, waste reduction, or recycling rates.

While sustainability might be about using less resources and using them in a way that can be, well, sustainable, many actually don't cast a second thought to doing some basic things, like using glass for drinking water instead of plastic bottles, using refillable coffee mugs as opposed to disposables and instead of using paper serviettes at the dinner table, use cloth serviettes. I think if people start to apply themselves first and they see the benefits in their immediate environment, then, getting them to but into a community scheme where we practice separating different waste types, and having it removed, by recyclers, then we would be going in the right direction, but, to most people its a matter of put it in the bin, and forget.

Another strategy to encourage sustainable behavior is to engage and empower your facility occupants to participate and contribute to the sustainability efforts of your facility. You can create opportunities and platforms for your occupants to share their ideas, suggestions, and feedback on how to improve the sustainability performance of your facility, such as surveys, focus groups, suggestion boxes, or online forums. You can also involve your occupants in the decision-making and implementation of sustainability projects and programs, such as green teams, committees, or task forces.

Motivation is something that is unique to each individual, and therefore any strategy around incentivization should have different branches which account for these individual differences. However, at the micro, individual task-level, there has been substantial work in incentivization. Look no further than social media or financial trading apps like Robinhood. FM operators seeking to encourage sustainable action should follow the line of those who work in gamification. Create measurable goals that are contests, and involve various departments to participate. Loser ruins the planet, winner gets prizes? You'd be surprised at how many departments will take it personally, get costumes, and drive up program adoption
