How can you encourage site supervisors to share their knowledge with their peers?

When fostering a culture of collaboration, as a CM/PM, you should lead by example by actively participating in knowledge sharing activities and demonstrating the value of sharing knowledge with peers.

Team-leaders and Project Managers are mainly responsible for how construction supervisors perform at site. a Successful Team-leader is the one who knows how to deal with each of his team members individually. To encourage site supervisors to share their knowledge with their peers Managers should implement few changes to their routine management system such as: Recognition and reward system, organizing workshops where supervisors can preach about their space of speciality, pairing senior supervisors with fresh ones, and last but not least lead by example.

This has been my most effective way of getting the best from any one that I work with. Building a cordial and respectful relationship and leveraging all trade as a unit. Sharing of knowledge and information among peers gives them confidence to express their opinions and also offering well meaning solutions towards any project/s.

Identifying and bridging knowledge and skill gaps will be essential for sure. There should be a robust Certification system in organization and every person before allowing to take charge must be duly validated formally through minimum three layers examinations- written test, interview and field task test. Knowledge and skills elements will be decided based on job role and deliverables. There should be a formal Certification System at least for every technical position. Managers, Supervisors and people down the line have to be certified initially and recertified duly every two years or as per the defined protocol in the company. Knowledge sharing will surely help the subordinates undergoing the Certification because that is actual learning

You will always have knowledge gaps through different disciplines in construction , no one is the complete person , it’s the enthusiasm to learn which is important.

I manage tasks among them on a continous basis. I make sure to follow up on the work assigned to them. I meet with them periodically to ensure the completion of the jobs.. And motivate them when they complete the required jobs

Sharing of success stories by Supervisors will encourage the team members to understand the logic behind the decision. Sharing Failures or wrong decisions will also surely benefit the team members for clearly knowing what should be avoided. Leadership plays a vital role in setting up this.

Always train those below you to be the next you. Fostering an attitude of genuinely wanting to see others succeed and grow will develop a team work environment with an unmatched comraderie. A successful site is achieved by an engaged team of leadership. Animosity and lack of collaboration breeds failure.

The good of the whole, is only as good as the sum of the parts. Encourage knowledge sharing and ensure the younger employees are supported and empowered, to feel that their input is of value. We often miss out on fresh young ideas, because the younger employees are often overlooked, or overshadowed, by the older more seasoned employees. With todays fast paced, and ever evolving technology, we should probably start encouraging our younger employees to provide new fresh ideas, in order to keep up with the constant changes in technology.

In addition to above mentioned actions, leadership should keep on showing the presence across. Senior Managers can demonstrate their commitment by walking the talk or doing knowledge sharing in various forums. Every supervisor, manager and team member should be happy sharing the knowledge, asking questions and this must continue without being reminded.

I learned a long time ago that if you want a better crew/team you need to train/teach them the way, no one is born with all the knowledge/skills to be good at their job. A great team learns from one another and isn't afraid to say "I don't know, show me".
