I recommend camera mounted teleprompters with reflective glass to allow the subject to look directly at the camera for the most natural eye-line. Using an off camera eye-line, however slight, will be noticeably unsettling. I don't recommend teleprompters for narrative acting, thus I would only use a teleprompter for scripts delivered to camera.

Unless someone uses a teleprompter all the time, they will need some time to adjust. If it's their first time, plan extra time for them to become comfortable on the set and feel comfortable reading. To get someone used to it, bring them on set and talk with them there. Don't have them stand on the mark, just talk with you about the script and the project off to the side. Let them adjust to the space and lights a bit. Then put them on the mark in front of the camera. Tell them you'll be able to adjust the speed and size. Have them casually read a bit to test how they think the pace is. Then tell them your going to do some rehearsals and have them practice before it's "Rolling". Often I roll these just in case.

Yes don't be afraid to change the script a word or two so it flows. Be carful to not change the tone or any key words that are specific to the project. But you'll likely run into a sentence that just doesn't flow for your talent and it's better to make the minor change then struggle trying to get through the awkwardness.

When dealing with an inexperienced person reading, I have them typically go through the whole script with two good reads. Then we'll go section by section to help adjust their performance. Actors can take direction and run through it again. A business leader that has to get on camera for the first time in years, will do take the notes better if it's broken down in shorter sections. This allows you to get them to change the fluctuations in their voice to be more natural and smoother. After they've gotten all the way though it, they are warmed up so we'll go back and have them redo their into and opening statement. Often this gets us a stronger opening as they are now warmed up and are not nervous.

My number one rule for teleprompters is know when to NOT use them. I discourage teleprompter use for any narrative film making. It is insulting to actors playing a character. In documentary interviews it usually comes across unauthentic but sometimes simple bullet point reminders can be helpful for nervous interviewees. On the flip side, I encourage them for teleprompters in speeches, newscasts, host/narration, and most any other script delivered to camera.
