Using this structure to define the problem statement has never has never let me down... What is the problem? How bad is it? - put some numbers behind it What is the impact? - why should anyone care? Example: Customers are complaining their coffee is being served cold. We received 600 complaints in October and 90% related to this issue. We are losing customers as a result and it's damaging our reputation. You hardly need any data at this stage. Just enough to know that there is clearly an issue and it's worth diving deeper. The improve phase is when theory and practice converge. I normaly say that DMAIC is a PDCA with some improvement it means that just work in top down at the company if high manager believe that will work and suport the utilization of this tool and anothers supervisors, team leader and operators will do the necessary for DMAIC work well, it's an amazing tool.
