In order to fly a drone commercially you need to obtain your Part 107 License form the FAA. This isn't an extremely difficult thing to do but it's an extremely important step. I recommend purchasing a course such as Pilot institute. Once you get this you'll have a much better understanding of how a drone works, where you can fly, getting approvals, and all the other aspects of flying a drone for work.

In my experience, and i have seen it in many drone shots, on cheap and expensive productions, it is very important to switch off the 'crispness' button on the drone. Every time branches or foliage are in the shot, a regular occurence in aeroal shots, the crispness overcompensates the hard lines of trees. It gives the image a very 'video' like look. To be avoided at all costs.

Like everything else that deals with video production, the drone and its footage has to provide more than beautiful or useful pictures. The question you need to ask yourself is this: what is this footage for? From/for which point of view am i using it? What does it SAY? Too many pieces overuse it or use it when they have nothing else to show; which can punch a gaping hole in a narrative. Is the victim's point of view or the perp's? The way the audience can assess a damage or an improvement or simply features of a space? Is it God's point of view, as in one of Scorcese's Taxi Driver's sequence after the shooting, where the carnage is seen from a powerless but critical eye? Questions one might ask oneself. For doc or scripted.

To effectively use aerial footage we have to be mindful to not overuse it too. While aerial footage is really cool and adds a great dimension to any edit, remember it is meant to be one perspective among many others in the final video.
