How can you effectively test microservices?

Testing microservices involves checking each part alone (unit testing), how parts talk to each other (integration and contract testing), the whole app’s performance (end-to-end and load testing), and its ability to handle problems (resilience testing). It's also important to ensure it's secure (security testing) and to monitor how it works in real-time. Automating these tests helps keep everything running smoothly.

Testing microservices demands a unique approach: 1. Granularity: Addressing multiple levels of granularity. 2. Complexity: Navigating intricate dependencies. 3. Strategy: Employing the testing pyramid: - Unit testing: Validate microservice functionality. - Integration testing: Ensure smooth interactions. - End-to-end testing: Confirm overall system functionality and user experience.

According to my knowledge and experiences on microservices, Unit Testing, and integration testing as well as System testing are necessary for microservices. Unit Testing covers the functionality level of a service, Integration Testing covers the communication between the microservices and System Testing covers the overall testing of a system. Since microservices are inter-connected to perform a specific goal or target. The System testing covers a goals are met or not with the overall interconnection of microservices. Last but not least, Fault tolerance is the most important part of Microservices. How the service handles the communication failure between services. This section is also most important during the testing of microservices.

My way of testing the microservice is first to debug and see the API calls. Secondly make sure that there are no dependent calls in between the microservices Third: If there are API calls for static data within the microservices make sure they are cached so no further calls are to be done to imporve its response time. Once done make sure that the API's have been unit tested. In the end run the load test via jmetere to make sure the API's TPS is achieved upto the standard

We can integrate services independent testing and integration testing to perform testing of micro services. Independent testing of services ensures that the business logic, methods, and internal services are performing well. Integration testing helps to figure out the issues and problems in communication between micro services. Mocking of payloads for REST APIs for services and calling from each other as per requirements ensures the correctness. Load testing of each services and as a whole willing play a crucial role in checking the performance and reliability.

Automating tests for microservices ensures quality and consistency amidst numerous services and frequent updates. Automation facilitates faster, more frequent, and reliable testing, crucial for early error detection. Utilize tools like JUnit, TestNG, Mockito, and Selenium for automation. Integrating testing into your CI/CD pipeline with Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps enhances efficiency. This approach minimizes manual testing, speeds up the development cycle, and ensures the delivery of robust microservices by embedding testing into the continuous development flow.

You should implement automating tests by which you can streamline the testing process, allowing for frequent and consistent validation of microservices' functionality, performance, and resilience. Automation enables the rapid execution of tests across different environments, facilitating early detection of bugs and issues. Additionally, automated tests can be integrated into continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, enabling seamless validation of microservices with each code change or deployment.

Not only in microservices but, you always need to create automated tests for your software, but in this case, a good suite of tests it's: Test the microservice like unit test, feature test, integration test mocking, all good practices. Probably this microservice is integrated with databases, streaming data, queues, and other possible solutions. Everything needs to be tested, checking for example if you are receiving the streaming data every 1 minute, if not you need to alert the team in your company software like Teams, Slack, or Discord. If no one is assigned to work on this in 5min for example, it can be scaled and trigger a phone call to all teams.

TDD (Test Driven Development) and requirements for testing coverage before merging your code are good starting points. Since well designed microservices are often easy to test (self contained, reduced dependencies and defined scope) with some discipline, test automation should contribute to make you code faster and better services.

As you split services the API contract is your guarantee to other services. Testing your contract ensure you aren't breaking anyone else, when changes are made. It also makes you think about how to manage those changes over time. I also recommend that each team that develops a micro-service also develop the test mocking framework that other teams can use in their unit and integration testing. This helps prevent the mock misalignment issues, where unit tests of other services continue to pass even when they shouldn't.

Contract testing is more than just ensuring the execution is correct but also that the organization's standards for defining the contracts is adhered to. It's impossible to manually review all endpoint definitions and ensure that the current standards are followed.

Contract tests make sure that services respect API interfaces that their clients depend on. That should include specific values as well as the API schema. It is a good idea to define enums in API specifications where possible.

Like in older days we used to have constant monitoring for our servers to about there cpu and ram usage. We need to do the same for our containers. Once we have monitoring let's say with Prometheus and Grafana we have all the data and the additional once needed. Then we can monitor the logs to identify faulty api points or traffic surge. By that we can then analyse the need of updating our strategy and how traffic is routed within.

Testing microservices in an exact and fine-grained way might be challenging: when systems are interconnected, distributed and need to work in sync, the idea of artificially reproducing a certain behaviour to measure it and compare it to an expected measurement doesn't work as well as it does in smaller-scale scenarios like unit testing a single module. Debugging microservices takes a lot more effort than you do in monolithic. This is especially true when you have a few dozen of services communicating with each other in either sync or async mode. You must have some form of tracing strategy in place where you can trace a through a chain of service calls. This sounds complicated. However, Spring Cloud makes it so easy. You just need to add dependency for Micrometer and enable tracing and you are good to go with the basic tracing. In addition, you will need distributed logging strategy. The most common way is ELK where logs are collected to a centralised data store where you can run queries to find debug information.

In my experience a high degree of automation, ensures efficiency and faster feedback during development. The distributed nature of microservices (such as Docker containers or Kubernetes clusters) in their runtime environment demands a special testing approach. This effective testing involves: Comprehensive Unit Testing: Ensures individual microservice functionalities work as intended. Integration Testing: Verifies proper communication and data exchange between services. Contract Testing (Optional): Validates that services adhere to their communication agreements. End-to-End Testing: Simulates real-world user journeys to test the entire application flow. This combined approach ensures well-tested, reliable, and maintainable microservices.

A software company needs to have policy for software testing and development so that every developer talks and operates in the same way. Expecially in microservices application is crucial that a team or more teams can work effectivly together to prevent and fix bugs via testing, monitoring and debugging. A good approach is to start with the individual, everyone should test the code that he writes and also how it consumes other libraries or services. Having dedicated developers for testing also helps and is crucial is a big environment. Not everyone likes to create and manage tests, thats way dedicated developers for testing can be a great resource to the team.

The best practices should involve a clean code approach as long as single responsibility rule following. When microservice does many things it's just a distributed monolith. Microservice should be easy maintainable, replaceable, with a single function it does. Many of them could be, actually, replaced with a cost-efficent cloud solutions as Cloud Run, Cloud Functions and Preemptible/Spot VMs from GCP.

I believe the most important thing to do when building a microservices-based application is to clearly define its surface area - its API - and treat it like a database schema. A well-designed API would require less changes. It must also be evolved to be backward compatible with previous versions as much as possible to avoid coordinated releases of multiple microservices. The API surface is the contract for inter-service communication and once that's evolved and tracked like a database combined with automated tests testing it, things become much easier. Moreover, the API surface tests are not a supposed to be replacement to unit tests, which should test the underlying business logic in isolation.

You should also consider checking - Scalability Test - Security Testing (To make sure the data is being transmitted end to end as expected in complex structure, Data leakage, DDOS testing & prevention etc...) - CD/CD pipeline works properly. - Cache testing (Sometimes caches can go really bad, lets say module B depends on module A but due to caching bugs the cache of A didn't updated new change while in the module B new deployment, we required some different form of data so here due to caching incorrect strategy or due to improper implementation, issues can happen & live environment could affect.) - I think one of the very important is SSL certificates are being auto renewed or not, specially when you have HTTPS only strategy implemented.

Test standards and automation process should be clearly defined and treated as first-class citizen in a team. Here are the essentials to consider when defining your test standards: 1. Define consistent test cases for features; Pay high attention to edge cases 2. Test naming convention should be consistent throughout your entire project 3. Define test level for each component 4. Treat test code just like your production code 5. No test no code 6. Fixing failed test (also true for build) has highest priority 7.
