How can you effectively pitch your product ideas?

Understanding your audience is the compass that guides your pitch's direction. For instance, when presenting your eco-friendly product to customers, focus on how it addresses their environmental concerns. However, when talking to potential investors, emphasize the profitability and market potential. Adapting your message to cater to the unique needs and interests of each audience ensures that your pitch resonates, making it more likely to lead to success. In essence, it's about speaking their language to create a meaningful connection.

I have been through a number of such situations while doing a plethora of product launches. It is never about just making the product but always about understanding what the market needs really are. Going and discovering the reality from the market can bring in unparalleled difference.

There are 4 audiences that you can consider when pitching your product idea. 1. Pitch to customers to get them to buy/sign up. 2. Pitch to management to get green light and resources to execute the ideas. 3. Pitch to investors to get funding. 4. Pitch to partners to get their support in providing supply. Each audience needs different positioning and messaging since their goals differ.

One thing that helps me here is to imagine your pitch as a tailored suit, custom-made for each individual. It’s not just about fitting in, it’s about making them feel like the main character in your story. That’s how you become not only memorable but relevant and impactful.

Customers are not only your audience. Management teams are also your audience. Partners are also your audience. Investors are also your audience. Your pitch varies for different audiences. You can't pitch the same way to investors like you pitch customers. Each group want to hear different things!

In most successful sales, an impact that is easy to understand is key. A metric that you feel is impactful might not be a priority for the org. When you ask the ‘why’ behind the org wanting to fix a problem, you will uncover the true value prop. the client expects.

Your value proposition depends on your target audience. You may have 1 product, but you can have multiple value propositions for that 1 product for different audiences eg. customers, partners, exclusive supplier, crowd investors, etc.

Defining a compelling value proposition is the cornerstone of an impactful product pitch. It's not just about what your product does; it's about articulating why it matters to your audience. A wеll-craftеd valuе proposition communicatеs thе uniquе bеnеfits and advantagеs your product brings, sеtting it apart in a crowdеd markеt. Whеn pitching your product, lеading with a clеar valuе proposition not only capturеs attention but also answers thе fundamеntal question of "What's in it for thеm?" It bеcomеs thе hеartbеat of your pitch, guiding your narrativе and rеsonating with your audiеncе's nееds.

My input on this topic is that when you use numbers in your explanation that address the true problem of the prospect, you have a higher probability of garnering interest. Seek to use quantitative elements in your value proposition statements to make it easier for the customer to do the math and see the value clearly.

STAR is a great start, but to truly rock you must dive deeper into storytelling techniques and see which approach fits best with the problem you are trying to solve and the solution you are trying to pitch. I definitely recommend reading Nancy Duarte's Resonate book for some great storytelling tips.

ONCE UPON A TIME …. This sentence puts you directly in the “curiosity mode”. FACTS TELL, BUT STORIES SELL ??? Storytelling is the art of using narratives to engage and connect. As facilitator of 100+ innovation projects, I have experienced that “Our customer‘s journey”, “Our customer’s main issue”, “Our new disrupting business model”, or “The way we create sustainable impact”, are wonderful subjects for convincing stories. A great example of storytelling is Apple's "Think Different" campaign, where they celebrated individuals who defied the norm, inspiring people to challenge the status quo and embody the Apple brand. This story-driven approach resonates with customers on an emotional level and helps establish a deeper connection.

Check out Christopher Nolan's art of storytelling that produces winning movies like Oppenheimer, Batman, Inception, etc. He doesn't write scripts. Instead he visualizes the entire movie in a single page with a visualization of system to tell the story in a beautiful way.

As the challenge is connecting with who you are talking to, the proven way for that to happen is to use a compelling story. If you're not good at writing the story, get help. If you're not good at telling the story, get help. Needing help is not a weakness. It certainly is worth the effort to get better at both from a personal perspective, but don't be afraid to leverage others. The point is for the story to be told and for it to connect.

Institutionalize these questions, objections for different audiences. Don't just make a list and scrap them. Store them in a shared doc that can be updated as living documents. If the audiences answer the questions, update them in the doc.

In my experience, the best thing you can do is craft your pitch so that you set up the questions you want to be asked. Almost all pitches are time-limited, which means you have to get your main story told. If you do tell your story in such a way as to lead the listener to an obvious set of questions, you want to expound upon, then you effectively increase your interaction time which raises your probability of a successful outcome.

There are 2 approaches here when it comes to practicing and refining your pitch: 1. Practice, practice, practice until you know it like robot. Apple executives' presentations of new products is a great example. 2. Know the structure, key points and what flows one after another. By having mental models in your head you can have variations how and what you pitch based on the overall structure. This is not winging it.

An impeccable presentation will not only help you be-in-control but also make the client feel more connected with your pitch. Your unwavering conviction is what you wish to communicate through your pitch/presentation.

Always write your pitch down and then read it out loud. Reading it out loud allows your mind to process your words in a different way than just reading them. The effort is well worth it as it should help you craft a more cohesive story that has a better chance of connecting. Iterate through your pitch as many times as possible to make it natural. If you can deliver a relaxed, in-control presentation, you will set yourself apart.
