I agree that knowing your guests is important. The key here is to use the information as knowledge that helps you to understand the interests of the guests not as a checklist to ensure you cover what you know during the event or within a one off conversation. Using what you know about your guest in order to build a sincere connection and lasting relationship is a skill worth learning and generally, practicing often. The “checklist” interaction is just…obvious and awkward.

Once you have a list of guests you want to network with, plan how you will approach them and what you will say. You can use the silent auction items as conversation starters, as they reflect your cause and your guests' passions. You can also use the program or the venue as icebreakers, or compliment your guests on their attire or accessories. Avoid generic or boring questions like "How are you?" or "What do you do?". Unless the event has been impacted by weather or it’s a Meteorologist Fundraiser definitely avoid conversations about “the weather”. You know… this cliche conversation starter: “Sooo…what do you think about all the snow we’re having this winter?” ?? Prepare yourself and Practice a few interesting topics relevant to the individuals attending, the event and some of the interesting topics already noted in this feed. Another great strategy is to maybe ask a question or open a conversation with something interesting that was previously discussed with you and another guest. Eg. “I was just having an interesting chat with someone about X… led me to think about the work you’re doing in Y… what are your thoughts?”
