How can you effectively manage risk when selecting new ideas?

There are methods to evaluate risks. It can be done by establishing a matrix for displaying the level of risks in the form of High, Moderate, and Low using a framework to define these levels of risks in terms of definition or numbers.

It also ensures your pursuits align with overarching business goals, allowing effective allocation of resources and targeted risk mitigation strategies.

Having a framework to manage risk is best to mitigate or handle the risk. Framework acts as a mechanism to identify risk continuously. It gives a ways to identify, mitigate, respond to the risk. Once of the simple framework which can be applied to any situations is RAID log R - Risk A - Assumptions I - Issues D - Dependencies

An alternative framework to RICE is also the PIE framework, focusing on Potential, Importance, and Ease. Assess the idea's Potential by evaluating its scalability and market alignment, Importance based on strategic alignment and customer needs, and Ease considering implementation complexity and resource requirements. By analyzing new ideas through these lenses, you gain a comprehensive understanding of their value and risk, enabling more informed decision-making in innovation endeavors.

Besides the Lean Canvas and Business Model Canvas, other valuable tools for managing risks when selecting new ideas include the good old SWOT Analysis for assessing internal strengths and weaknesses within external opportunities and threats, Customer Journey Mapping to understand user experience and satisfaction, Prototyping Tools like e.g. InVision for visualizing ideas and testing usability, MVP development to launch simplified versions for real-world feedback, and A/B Testing Tools such as e.g. Google Optimize for comparing different versions and making data-driven decisions.

Before selecting a new idea, conduct a risk assessment to identify and mitigate potential risks. Diversify your approach by pursuing multiple ideas simultaneously to spread the risk. Risk is an interesting challenge, we have to be careful that by trying to remove all risks we don't get caught by Peltzman effect which states the more we add safety measures to a thing the more it increases people to take risks because by adding safety people take on risk more challenges believing they are safe

But there are of course, a large number of other good frameworks out there (e.g. to enhance risk management, consider the ISO 31000 framework, which provides a comprehensive and adaptable approach.)
