1 Choose your storage wisely

The first step to manage large RAW files is to choose a suitable storage device for them. You will need a lot of space, so you might want to invest in an external hard drive, a cloud service, or a NAS (network-attached storage) system. Depending on your workflow, you might also need a fast transfer speed, so look for USB 3.0, Thunderbolt, or Ethernet connections. Additionally, you should backup your files regularly and use a reliable file system, such as NTFS or exFAT, to avoid corruption or loss.

Have a solid back up strategy that is automated. Best practice is to have 3 copies of your files. 2 copies on local devices and 1 copy on the Cloud.

Choosing storage is super important when considering RAW files. With their substantially larger file size you'll find yourself filling up your computer storage quicker than you'd like. Choosing the best external drive and backup solution is super important! But equally important is, dare I say, deleting your unnecessary files. In the studio I practice a unique storage method: all client delivered files are contained in folders and saved to a specific external drive. All useable unedited files are then are saved by corresponding folder on another drive. Additionally, all files are backed up in client galleries and/or to the cloud.

Use an organization method that works for YOU, so that you’ll be consistent. For example, I remember photos by location, my folders are named by location. Others people remember by dates or clients. Be consistent with your rating methods. My first pass through a shoot is to flag the ones I want to revisit. 2nd pass is to give anything I want to work on 3 stars. Then as I edit the 3 star images I’ll promote or demote ratings.

Understanding file formats, color space and resolution needs for different uses is very important. Pay very close attention to these setting when exporting files. I put my exported files into a “temp” folder, and delete after a period of time when I won’t need quick access to them, as I can always return to my RAW file and re-export.
