Change is inevitable in any career, but especially in research, where new discoveries, funding opportunities, collaborations, and challenges can arise at any time. How can you cope with change and use it to your advantage? In this article, we will share some tips and strategies to help you develop resilience and adaptability in your research career.

Changes may arise because of new needs from the company and see you as the potential fit to cover it. Additionally, this may help you boost your career as being in front of new challenges that you are not involved in your current role. Imagine that now you make the decisions. With the research knowledge you have, will probably helps make the best ones. Important to note that being afraid is normal, but it's something that will surpass once you take confidence. Enjoy the change, learn and share new learning.

Hence the researcher needs to be tenacious in navigating change. Create a "change management plan" for yourself. If you went through a time of anxiety, I would recommend including a plan to deal with it in the change management plan.

Embrace what you don't know. No matter what research, what job, what career, etc., you change from or to, there will always be a learning curve at the start, for some more than others. If you need to take on new skills try remembering your favorite subject and how you learned it in school. What where the techniques you used to be good at the subject? Apply it to the new skill that you need to learn. Also, never be afraid to ask for help. You leader, boss, etc., don't want to see you fail, so ask for advice and help. Ego is a hard thing to overcome, but as soon as you set that aside you might find a new way to approach a difficult situation or step that you need to take to being sufficient at this new skill.
When I transitioned from academic to industry research, I was presented with the challenge of learning a plethora of new skills, techniques, and technology. A white paper intended for an industry audience is not the same as an academic journal article published for a scientific research audience. Understanding the difference and acting accordingly was first difficult. Using my research skills as a fulcrum, I spent the time and effort to understand the audience and master the technology and tools. With time, I effectively navigated this transformation. Informal conversations with peers, organization archives, and browsing the websites of prominent industrial research firms are extremely beneficial.

You should seek feedback from your peers, mentors, supervisors, or reviewers on your research progress, quality, and impact. You should also be open to constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement. Feedback can help you identify your gaps, strengths, and areas for development. It can also help you build trust and rapport with your network.
