How can you effectively handle a partner who resists change in a strategic partnership?

Communicate clearly on the proposed changes, identify and highlight the benefits and how they align to the objectives. Be positive and show how they may increase productivity and efficiency. Totally agree! Getting to the root cause of an issue is key to understanding behavior in any relationship, not just business. I find it best to have an open an honest conversation. Practicing active listening, taking notes, and being in a comfortable environment are key things I focus on when striving to have the best conversations. Coming into a tough conversation, it’s important to understand where the other person is coming from and even more important to understand that I may not be as right as I think I am. I am a natural innovator! I love change! The best people for me to partner with are people who will ask me questions, keep me grounding, and push me to have these conversations.

Communication also entails listening. So not only do you communicate benefits of the change to the partner, but you should also listen to their thoughts. Perhaps there is a rationale which you are "blinded" by which may be more detrimental.

Utmost necessary aspect, and a primary foundation of any relationship. In my experience, as soon as there is slight loss of respect from any party, whole motivation of the partnership sinks immediately.

I would suggest not to throw yourself into any strategic partnerships without background research. Avoid any contractual agreements from the start. Give yourselves time to get to know one another. Start small and don't put all your eggs into one basket. If it's meant to be, everything will work out, if not there isn't too much to lose.

Comprehensively communicate a-what you want to achieve (goal), b-what you wish to avoid (risk, pitfall), c-what you consider to be the partner's benefit, and d-the consequences from your partner's perspective if the change can not be done (due to her resistance). Those factors are not cast in stone, and you should debate them with your partners and understand their views. Ideally, you get to a mutual understanding and agreement on how to move forward. Otherwise, you might seek additional partnerships or exit the current one if the change is crucial for your business and you can't overcome the blockade.

Most important from my experience is to always put yourself in there shoes and think WIFM (what’s in it for me). Although common business goals, objectives and aspirations are all relevant, it’s important to really dig deep into personal motivation for change and that could be super different and have many factors. Motivation could be promotion, pay rise, awards, acknowledgment, chance to network, make my life easier. The point is to really understand what makes that stakeholders tick which will allow you to speak to there motivators when asking for, or guiding change when collaborating.
