1 Choose a suitable language

The first step to create structured programs is to choose a programming language that supports the features and paradigms that you need. Some languages are more suitable for structured programming than others, depending on their syntax, data types, control structures, modularity, and abstraction. For example, C, Pascal, and Python are languages that are widely used for structured programming, as they offer simple and consistent syntax, basic data types, conditional and loop statements, functions and procedures, and modules and classes.

2 Use top-down design

The next step is to use top-down design, which is a technique of breaking down a complex problem into smaller and simpler subproblems, and then solving them one by one. Top-down design helps you to organize your thoughts, plan your program structure, and identify the inputs and outputs of each subproblem. You can use tools such as pseudocode, flowcharts, or diagrams to represent the top-down design of your program, showing the main components and their relationships.

3 Follow the structured theorem

The structured theorem, also known as the B?hm-Jacopini theorem, states that any program can be written using only three basic control structures: sequence, selection, and iteration. Sequence is the execution of statements one after another in a fixed order. Selection is the execution of one of two or more alternative statements based on a condition. Iteration is the repetition of a statement or a block of statements until a condition is met. By following the structured theorem, you can avoid using unstructured control structures such as goto, break, or continue, which can make your code difficult to follow and modify.

4 Apply modularity and abstraction

Modularity and abstraction are two principles that help you to divide your program into independent and reusable units, such as functions, procedures, modules, or classes. Modularity allows you to separate the different aspects of your program, such as data, logic, and interface, and to encapsulate them in self-contained units. Abstraction allows you to hide the implementation details of your units, and to expose only the essential features and behaviors that are relevant to the users or other units. Abstractions at the right level are super important - being able to have compartmentalized components which can evolve and change over time is key for meeting future requirements. Make sure there is a strong API contract between the components and then you are free to iterate without fear of breaking the rest of the stack.

5 Use meaningful names and comments

The last step is to use meaningful names and comments to document your code and make it easier to understand and communicate. Names are the identifiers that you use to refer to the variables, constants, functions, procedures, modules, or classes in your code. Comments are the annotations that you use to explain the purpose, logic, or behavior of your code. Agreed, back in college, when I was working on my personal projects, I didn't really pay much attention to this aspect. But now, as a working professional, I've come to realize just how crucial it is to give meaningful names to variables. While multiple team members are working on the same project, giving meaningful names helps team members quickly grasp code's intent and contribute effectively.

For me, before jumping directly to the coding part, writing pseudo code and making flowcharts always worked in getting the better visual representation of the program logic. Having a good project structure always gives better readability and also it makes it easy to scale the project.
