What is the challenge and why is it important? Make a clear case why this problem was a primary concern. Second. What would you do about it? What was the plan? What timeline, resources and people would be involved in executing the plan. Third. What were the results? Was there a change in time cycles, cost savings, quality or even morale? In addition to verbally explaining the three steps above, you will be more persuasive and less likely to forget relevant facts if you prepare a visual illustration of your successful contribution.

Whether you are in an interview or a performance review, the STAR method is such a great way to highlight your achievements. The STAR method stands for - situation, task, action, result. To use it effectively during a performance review, you really want to try to formulate a succinct, compelling, and structured response. And keep in mind that the majority of your response should focus on your actions and results. The rest of the response should center on the task at hand and the actions/involvement in the situation.

In a performance review, showcasing your problem-solving prowess involves highlighting specific instances where you identified challenges, devised creative solutions, and achieved positive outcomes. Share success stories that emphasize your analytical thinking, resourcefulness, and ability to collaborate with others. Illustrate your approach to problem-solving by emphasizing key steps such as defining the problem, brainstorming solutions, implementing an action plan, and evaluating results. For me, it's all about concrete examples – sharing specific challenges faced, the strategies deployed, and the measurable impact achieved. Quantifying results not only adds weight but paints a vivid picture of contributions. I've found that telling a story, emphasizing collaboration, and aligning solutions with company goals make my problem-solving answers more compelling. Seeking feedback and investing in professional development further bolsters my case.

There are so many effective problem solving processes and tools. Heck, you may have even come up with a few systems of your own! Really anything that helps you solve problems by analyzing data, identifying the root cause of the problem, and developing a plan to solve that problem. I have used so many different types of problem-solving tools, including flowcharts, fishbone diagrams, Pareto charts, and many more. Problem solving is so valuable in the workplace, so during your next performance review it is definitely worth mentioning!

Another great mind frame to highlight your process is the GROW model (Goals, Reality, Obstacles and Will). That way, you can check on your KPI's and adjust them for the future with your leaders.

Don't think the manager will notice and remember all of the cases you are solving. Sometimes even we can forget it before the performance review process. The best way to show your impact, proactivity and not to forget anything is to keep a list of the challenging cases you solved during the year and what value it brought. I do it in the Google Sheets and update records during the year.

If you really want to make a wave during your next performance review, then you need to figure out how to communicate your impact and value. Days (or weeks/months) before the review, I recommend making a big ol' list of accomplishments. What a great way for you to look back on the year and really think about your successful projects, initiatives, creativity, customer feedback, etc. Write these down, and don't forget to describe how they relate to the company's goals. I love quantitative achievements, they are amazing. BUT, qualitative achievements can be just as powerful. So don't forget about new skills you have acquired, new responsibilities taken on, relationships you've built, ideas and projects you've pitched, and much more.

You should come to every performance review with demonstrated results and impact. No matter how good your manager might be, they will often forget the impact of what you do, especially if you're in a non-revenue producing role. Come prepared to highlight projects managed, problems solved, and processes improved. And then be prepared to show the impact of that fantastic work!

Be proactive in the first place. Initiate the conversation by expressing your interest in receiving constructive feedback. Ask your supervisor or colleagues if there are specific areas they believe you can improve or if there are challenges they've noticed. Then, be reflective. Share examples of specific challenges or projects you've worked on recently. Discuss the problems you encountered and the series of steps you took to address them.

Connect your problem-solving skills with your career aspirations. Illustrate how these skills are stepping stones to your dream role. If you're eyeing a leadership position, demonstrate how problem-solving is part of your leadership toolkit.
