General rules are to use as little space as possible, keep edges straight and have all UVs have the same density (unless some are hidden or flat colored). Any decent 3D artist should be able to make good UVs, it is required, they it just becomes a question of how much space you take, I worked on some stylized games that just needed a single pixel, or small rectangle to represent the colors, allowing us to save a lot of space sharing a single texture image
