I find use of relevant data to be very important in budgeting. Data will always give you a factual basis for decision making. Always collect relevant data that relates to the budget in your department/organisation and use this as a basis for forecasting on the departmental budget. Have a data driven culture in all planning and you will never go wrong. Be careful to collect accurate data and remember the saying 'garbage in garbage out'.
