How can you effectively communicate with a designer to avoid project disagreements?

You don't need to be a visual thinker to create an effective design brief. Here are 4 things you can discuss with your designer at the briefing stage, to create a shared frame of reference for the project ahead: >>The FEELINGS you want this work to evoke - comfort, longing, trust, urgency, caring? >>The CHARACTER that you want to convey - friendly, expert, innovative, traditional, reactive, sensible? >>The VALUE that you want to get across - premium, economy, or somewhere in between? >>The USER EXPERIENCE that you want to deliver - what response or user reaction would you love to provoke? Discuss all of this with your designer, and it will help you build a shared frame of reference to work from throughout your project together.

When working with a designer, clear communication is key for a successful outcome. Here are a few pointers from my experience: - Clearly outline the feelings, character, value, and user experience you envision for the design - Discuss the most effective channels for communication, considering the project's scope - Provide specific, objective, and timely feedback to guide the designer's work - Set transparent expectations regarding the number of revisions, time frame, and budget - Build trust and rapport by being transparent, supportive, and appreciative

As someone who has spent time in their career as a writer-based Creative Direction working with many different styles of designers, I would recommend: -Developing a brief that clearly communicates the needs/considerations/goals of copywriters, designers, and most importantly, the client — don't skimp on this! -Telling a creative to "do their magic" or something similar is the worst-possible advice. The parameters of a project — be they budgetary, industry, or audience — is precisely where creativity can thrive. Pushing against the boundaries is always more exciting than drifting aimlessly across "total creative freedom" -Don't be afraid to give direct feedback, but always be constructive. "Failure" lies on your shoulders, not theirs

A good analogy when it comes to constructing a brief is similar to “planning for a journey”. Any great trip or journey needs an itenerary, where is the venue or final destination, what time is the departure, what do we need to pack, do we have enough fuel for the trip, is the tyres pressure okay, how many stops will we take, etc.

When starting a creative production, you should always keep the first planning session live or online with your designer instead of written instructions. Especially live meeting fuels inspiration and co-creation. When the scope is defined, your designer can continue the creative process and ask questions via Slack or email - or set up another meeting or two if needed. Best solution is to have a collaboration portal like Odoo, that keeps all the discussion and information attached to a specific project and task. If the designer is sick, information can be found from the portal.

With designers, giving them visual cues of what you are looking for in your creative is important. You need to give them a brief, explain and may be show samples of what you have in mind. For senior designers, the CTA of the brief and what it should get them to do becomes important. They can clearly visualize what they are looking at.

Like any cook (as a client) consider having all the ingredients ready for the designer (chef or baker) to enable a dope final product. If your ingredients for the cake are not available or there is shortage, that is similar to an unfinished briefing form, yet expecting a perfect final product with missing ingredients.

The final outcome of any design project or layout is as good as the brief received from client. When the brief is mediocre more often than not the final design product will also be of average standard. An impactful briefing session is critical, it has to be well defined and leave opportunities for Q&As were applicable for the designer or art-director. More often than not, if a written brief is well written, verbal articulation is not required not unless questions from the designer arise.

Specific, clear and constant feedback is vital when working with designers. Pinpointing exactly what you want changed or reworked requires the director to have a clear vision of the work. Pairing the feedback with project objectives for the target audience will make the feedback more constructive and less about personal preference. Giving possible solutions and using an encouraging tone, being respectful and courteous, and promoting open dialogue for collaboration will help the designer feel comfortable to ask questions and understand your perspective better.

Provide visual examples of what you're looking for. Be specific about what you like or dislike about the example. Sketch your ideas or use wireframes if you can't find an example.
