I'm a fan of whatever gets the job done. UML and/or TOGAF can be very helpful for organization's that utilize it but can be an uphill battle where they don't. In my experience, you could simply start to document your security architecture with document or spreadsheet because something that is used is always better than something that is pretty. If I were looking to improve my documentation and modeling skills as part of an architecture role, I would look towards how to document architecture as code. It's highly emerging but modern software practices require decisions move closer to the automation they support. This makes security architecture decisions available cross-functionally and ready for root-cause analysis.
