Alumni group is a tricky group to handle. Unless you graduate from a premier institution, alumni from tier 2 and 3 institutions aren't well connected with their almamater. One can't leverage much through their college alumni network. The best that they can utilise is Linkedin where they have to search for their notable alumni based on positions and start networking.

I suggest people who want to attend events should do lot of pre event preparation understanding who all are visiting the event, who are the top three folks I should meet and initiate a conversation, what should be the opening statement to hold interest etc. When you do these pre work, it fetches maximum from these events for networking Other wise you end up with bunch of business cards.

I asked a new member of my team why she left her old company and the main reason was to do with "the lack of mentorship and ultimately seeing a clear route to growth" It is difficult to know where you are going if there is no one to look up to that you would want to emulate. However, you need to take it upon yourself to seek out people that you can learn from. Don't be afraid to ask, you would be surprised at how many people in business are looking for ways to give back and pay it forward. My advice if you are looking for someone to mentor you, is to actually go to someone that you respect and ask them if they have anyone that they think would be good to mentor you as the chances are, they may say yes! Or recommend you to someone.
