How can you distinguish between a business analyst and a business manager?

A business analyst primarily has to focus on understanding business processes, identifying problems, and documenting and proposing the best solutions that will meet consumer needs. They bridge the gap between business stakeholders and IT teams, ensuring that technology solutions align with business needs. A business manager is the operations architect who oversees the overall operations and strategic direction of a department, project, or team. They are accountable for achieving business goals, managing resources, and ensuring efficient processes.

Business Analyst generally analyzes a business process's efficacy by working closely with the IT department to find better solutions. They work on understanding the current processes in a business and suggesting improvements. Business Manager is responsible for managing department resources or even the complete organization. Their focus is ensuring that the business stays aligned with its strategies to achieve final goals.

In my experience, a business analyst is not a job title. A business analyst has a set of skills, an ideology, and a mindset that allows them to perform their job, regardless of the naming. Some characteristics of a BA is someone who is analytical, a problem solver, an excellent communicator, and in contexts of IT projects, an efficient translator between business and technical jargon. In essence, a person could be both a Business Manager (as a job title) and a Business Analyst (as a mindset).

One thing I have found helpful as a Business Analyst is to understand the needs of my organization. When you are aware of where you are, you can create the picture for where you are going more clearly. It is in my role that I am the point of contact between technology and our internal stakeholders. I find ways to innovate processes and keep our projects on schedule. I am looking for ways to increase efficiency and reduce risk. Great communication, organization and leadership skills allow me to thrive in a fast paced environment. I support my organization in many ways including data analytics, process creation, testing, requirements gathering and project management.

A Business Manager initiates, executes and completes a project (set of predefined tasks to achieve a particular goal) and makes sure it is achievable. A business analyst is someone who knows the problem statement, business case as well as the industry, he or she can identify its issues, and helps to find and deliver potential solutions which act as building block to the plan set by the Business Manager.

Business Manager role may involve working with multiple Business Stakeholder and monitor the health and deliverables of the project. Not too much a technical person but with amazing managerial and leadership skills to grow and build the team motivation!

To simply put it, Business Manager would have some overall lap with Business Analyst but the objective of a Business Manager would be more inclined with keeping the numbers growing and positive by using a very critical skills of business observation/behavior/performance etc. Note: Here numbers are not referred to sales or revenue but on a scalability level. Let's put it like this, a Business analyst might need to be inclined to consider catering to immediate or near future objectives. Whereas Business Managers would be required to have a vision far ahead to manage larger impact on the business and its performance in its life cycle.

In summary while Business Analysts concentrate on projects to enhance processes efficiency; Business Managers have a role in achieving organizational objectives through effective resource management. Both roles are vital, for the success of an organization. Involve responsibilities and require specific skillsets.

S/he should be able to maintain both Macro and Micro perspective, and be a proven troubleshooter, amongst others; the analyst however remains the enabler and identifier of IOAs

A business analyst can be engaged from an external resource for a specific project. Frequently, this individual will have experience working with varying types of organizations or specialize in a particular industry. The external resource may be engaged for their industry or specific IT/software experience in addition to analytic skills. The advantage to a business analyst from an external resource is a unique perspective they can bring. The external analyst can “see the forest for the trees”. In addition, an external business analyst has the opportunity to be more direct regarding challenges with processes or people. They are not involved in the company politics, and may be more objective.

Both roles have skills in common. For me what makes the big difference is a business manager is more focus on planning while the businest analyst is more focus on the ongoing business needs.

Besides the Business Manager and Analyst roles, there's also the Functional Analyst, who starts the hierarchy in business analysis that reflects the Analyst's career path. Functional Analyst analyzes business process parts, creating specifications and models for system components. Business Analyst, using the Functional Analyst's work results, creates and manages a system to meet business needs, including process development and sub-systems integration. Business Manager, using the system built by Business Analyst, works for financial and marketing success and overall business growth. These roles, each with distinct tasks and responsibilities, together form a complete 'Business Analysts' team, contributing to the business's success.

Even though they are different roles, you may find yourself in a project where you may be doing both, and that is good. Know the roles, find the skills you excel at to find which one you should focus on. While being analytical is a top skill in the role, it is just the beginning, working on the best solution/improvement is the hardest but most rewarding skill.

Being able to also understand the technical side of the project, you’ll be a pink cow amongst other business analysts. You’ll have much more added value than the rest of the BA’a around you. Plus, the level of details for the specs you add for the developers will be priceless if you deal with low seniority teams.

Consider that it takes a team to make it work. Without a good business analyst, a business manager risks making decisions without supporting data. Without a good business manager, a business analyst risks having a workload out of alignment with strategic priorities.

BA is the function bridging the usual communication gap between business functions and IT by translating business requirements into IT specifications. Ideally the BA analyses the underlying process/activity and supports the creation of optimal solutions. The BA either has already detailled technical knowhow or creates that know-how during an analysis phase, and ends up being an expert in processes and systems. The scope of the BM is greater, e.g. managing the relationship not only with IT, but also with other stakeholders like CFO, CRO, CEO for the related business. He furthermore supports managers of the related business area in business projects (e.g. budgeting, bus.dev.) and can have more senior roles in projects, e.g. project lead.
