Good experienced angels can open strategic doors in an industry where it's hard to move. Here are some parameters you can consider to find a suitable angel: - Can influence consumers in your targeted space - Can give at-least 30 -60 mins a month to work in your interest - Can invest some patience capital for long term (like 5-7 years) - Can ask critical questions which makes you think, pivot and scale

Their approach is often more personal and relationship-driven compared to institutional investors. While their contributions might be less in financial terms, the strategic advice and expansive network they bring can be a game-changer for startups. However, as with any partnership, alignment of vision and understanding of roles is crucial to ensure a harmonious relationship between founders and angel investors.

Because angel investors invest their own money, they can be more reactive when deciding to invest. Also, they will base their decisions more on feeling and intuitions than long due diligence. For founders, being good at managing angels, and leveraging their knowledge, experience and network can be more complicated than expected, especially when they have many angels (until so called "party rounds")

Since VCs manage group money instead of personal money, there can be heavier due diligence and many more requirements taking place before deals are established.

They seek high-growth companies with the potential for substantial returns, and they are more likely to participate in later-stage funding rounds. While VCs may provide guidance and support, their involvement is generally less hands-on than angel investors. They are more focused on financial returns and may require board seats.

Something I have noticed is that VCs and Corporate Investors might prefer dealing with Corporations instead of LLCs since it makes the due diligence process easier given the more legal reporting requirements that corporations have that LLCs do not necessarily have.

Typically, corporate venture capital (CVC) funds are very strategic with their fund strategy. Some require very rigorous, time-intensive due diligence. Before going into due diligence with a CVC, I highly recommend that you obtain an experienced venture capital attorney who's familiar with facilitating CVC deals. There are lots of intricacies, and you do not want to expose too much of your intellectual property (IP) or secret sauce without proper legal counsel. Sadly, I have witnessed horror stories of corporations copying a startup's innovation and stomping the startup out in the market because the corporation has more capital to execute. Not all corporations are evil; just like any partnership, you want to trust but verify.

Although the sayings of cold-invites are risky and warm intros are nice, to be honest there really is not a one-size-fits-all model. I have received cold invites that I found interesting and warm intros that I did not see potential in. Have a strong team, be confident and take your chances as if you only have one chance at impressing. Give it your all. If it does not work out, well, be happy that the pool of VCs, Angel Investors and Corporate Investors is vast and growing!

I recommend seeking an intermediary to introduce you to VCs rather than reaching out directly. VCs get countless messages daily, and standing out is tough. Use an incubator, a VC-backed startup, or a well-connected mentor for introductions. These connections carry credibility and speed up the process. They not only get you meetings but also build trust, which is crucial for lasting investor relationships. This strategic networking approach can unlock the resources your startup needs to succeed.

I don't think there's a one size fits all method to approach investors however, having a middle-man or like I call it - a spokes man is always great. It softens grounds for you. Regardless, it important to have a strong team, pitch deck and portfolio.

I recommend that founders create a list of characteristics of their ideal investor. Then, source potential investors who fit that archetype. After that, conduct preliminary due diligence on investors like they'd research you. Learn the investor's thesis, criteria, and fund strategy, interview their port co founders, and learn what it takes to approach and pitch the investor successfully. Then, conduct thoughtful outreach, pitching yourself and your business in a way that takes the guesswork out - be explicit about how you fit their thesis and criteria, and provide the metrics you've learned they appreciate. I can always tell when a founder has taken the time to do their homework on me and is actually pitching to me, not just any investor.

When approaching different partners, consider tailored strategies: Angel Investors: Approach them through personal connections or angel investor networks. Share your passion for your business and how it aligns with their interests. Venture Capitalists: Research VC firms relevant to your field, present data-driven pitches showcasing market potential, and how your business meets the demand. Corporate Investors: Identify corporations aligned with your industry, and propose collaboration based on mutual strategic goals. For instance, your business can enhance their product offerings through XYZ.

One other thing to consider with angel Investors is the difference between those with strong experience as operators or founders, who can really help with their knowledge and network and those who have more a corporate background. The second category will usually invest as part of Angel Networks, whose collective review might take longer than those investing directly. Also these Angel Investors with more corporate background might sometimes be less helpful, or even not helpful at all and asking for too much time/reporting/answers from founders.

In my start-up fist, we had an institutional investor, a London-based VC. One of the things you need to understand is what is the length of the VC and when they need to exit. Once our VC was closer to exit, they went through selling all businesses in their portfolio including ours. Luckily, we managed to buy them out by introducing a group of angel investors. The change in the company culture and performance changed from one day to another. Angels were more focused in driving the business with us which resulted in the exit to the biggest player on the market.
