How can you discuss your customer service experience in an interview?

Review the mission statement, values as well as the job description. You then want to discuss the aspects of your experience that you feel are relevant to the position. Also, be sure to highlight unique tasks you did. "Provided visual merchandising for store" "Supervised # of employees" "Oversaw money management" etc. You want to focus on what makes that experience relevant and what makes you stand out from every other customer service person

I have given a lot of interviews, but I have not been on nearly as many interviews. As an interviewer I usually find myself more comfortable with a candidate that asks questions. I feel that interviews go both ways, while I am looking for someone with the proper skills and temperament, they need to be looking for good supervision and a productive work environment. I like to try to set expectations early because it has been my experience that some candidates over value some of their skills, not because they are not useful or proficient, but because they are not suitable to our industry, office, or environment. Many times it is easier to train someone to work in our field knowing that they are willing to ask questions.

We are all customers. Understanding the psychology of interpersonal relationships is valuable in both customer service and the workplace environment. A great way to introduce your customer service experience is cite how you dealt with a difficult customer situation when discussing your areas of strength. Be sure to show how you used your knowledge of relationship building as the foundation in the resolution of the problem.

In my exprience throughout the years working in customer service, one must achieve a high level of satisfaction with the service/product that you offer. Achieving client trust is paramount in one's success.

When reading the job description and values of the company keep in mind how your experience meets or exceeds the requirements. Also, what additional attributes you can bring to the position. Give examples of how you meet or exceed their expectations and how they can benefit from your experience and knowledge.

Company Values and Mission: Pay attention to the company's values and mission statement. These can provide insights into their approach to customer service. Look for keywords or themes related to customer satisfaction, exceeding expectations, building strong relationships, or delivering exceptional service. Measurement of Success: Consider the metrics or indicators mentioned in the job description or any customer service-related goals mentioned by the company. This can give you an understanding of how they measure success. For example, they may emphasize speed of response, quality of service, customer satisfaction scores, customer loyalty, or customer retention rates.

Some ways to get started: There was a time when.... One time while working at XYZ company... When I worked in XYZ setting... Try to keep your scenarios regardless if it is relating to customer service or not, straight to the point so the interviewer can follow. Brain storm customer service scenarios to prepare yourself for the interview. I personally feel it is imperative to research and comply a list of possible behaviorial/STAR method questions you feel you may get asked and answer them prior to the interview to get comfortable with this method. Choose customer service scenarios that demonstrate how you went over and beyond.

The STAR method is a definite expectation for any interview. May not be commonly known as STAR, but the approach may appear in the form of a very common interview question . For example,Give me an example of a difficult situation or problem and the steps you took to remedy the issue. This question reveals a great deal about a potential candidate/employee - the candidate’s response can display a individual’s people skills, problem - solving skills, independence, adaptability flexibility and tenacity just to name a few noteworthy skills.

? The STAR method is a structured way of answering behavioral interview questions by discussing the Situation, Task, Action, and Result. This helps keep your answers concise and focused, while also demonstrating how you have successfully handled situations in the past. For example, you might describe a time when you had to deal with a difficult customer (Situation), the goal you were trying to achieve (Task), the specific steps you took to address the problem (Action), and the positive outcome that followed (Result).

Think of specific instances where you successfully handled challenging customer interactions, resolved complex issues, or exceeded customer expectations. These examples will demonstrate your ability to handle various customer service scenarios.

Utilize purposeful story telling rather than just listing skills. People can read the skills on your resume or CV. Share a story and the lessons learned. The story can be yours or something you were able to learn from someone else’s experience. How did you utilize the skill? What experience called for the skill? Did you have the skill before the experience? Don’t just tell me what you did, tell me how! And help me relate to you.

Show interest in the job position by linking your customer service experience at the time of the interview, catching the attention of the recruiter by describing a hard situation and applying your customer service skills to handling angry customers, how to reach customer satisfaction in a time manner, there are a lot of opportunities to show your capacity when you are applying for a customer service position either face to face or over the phone.

As someone who have been with same employer and essentially the same title for the majority of my career, I found it important to tell a story with my resume, highlighting the growth of the dispensary I managed over time and evolving with the industry itself. Highlighting growth in a position over time demonstrates not only loyalty but also your own elasticity especially as a manager, when it comes to growth or even downsizing of a company. In the cannabis industry one of the only constants is change itself and highlighting one's ability to adapt is a big plus.

Sharing specific anecdotes from your past experiences, where you successfully addressed challenges or achieved positive outcomes, can effectively demonstrate your skills and abilities to potential employers. It's a powerful way to showcase your practical expertise and create a compelling narrative during interviews. Formula 90/10 = (cause and positive outcome/narrative)

In my experience, a crucial aspect of providing top-tier customer service is presenting a comforting demeanor in times of distress. I am not referring to stating things like “Rest assured everything will be okay”, rather listening and hearing out everything they say while internally thinking of solutions. A customer may come to you and blow off steam, let them blow off the steam and keep things cool, calm, and collected once they finish. I often find once problems are communicated, and that initial steam has been released, that serving as that grounded, un-phased voice of reason, tends to get the conversation back on track and encourage progress. The saying “let cooler heads prevail” is extremely true and effective.

It’s important to emphasize your adaptability and flexibility in handling different situations and personalities. Show that you can effectively navigate challenging interactions and resolve conflicts with a calm and solution-oriented approach. Highlight your ability to think on your feet and make sound decisions in fast-paced or high-pressure situations. Discuss any training or development opportunities you have sought out in the past, and express your openness to training programs or initiatives that the company may offer.

In my experience working in and hiring customer service roles, personality can be so helpful for brand voice. Customer service is what keeps customers engaged, connected, and happy with your brand. Having someone who has a great attitude and their own personality can add so much to that experience. The ability to empathize and honor customers starts with your ability to be kind and empathetic with other people, too. Show employers who you are!

Few things win me over more than someone who has an effervescent, empathetic, and genuine personality. In my opinion, as a business owner and executive, I care less about the degree or accolades someone has accumulated in their career and more about who they are as a person. At the end of the day, the personality, candor, and heart of an employee are what serve the customer or client, not their degree. It all starts from within for me.

It best to highlight on the good experiences with past employers. If your previous position was at a call center, let the interviewer know that you answered every call with a smile on your face because positivity goes a long way. In certain positions and situations, you have to be stern but be empathetic. Positive attitudes will always keep the customer satisfied and wanting to return even if it did not go 100 percent their way.

My favorite part of the interview is asking questions. Doing your research on the company is critical. However, showing your interest in the company, the role, and the future growth are all stand outs in any interview setting. Some of my personal favorite questions are: - Can you let me know more about the management and leadership style in this role? - I'd love to know any of the future goals of this department and what plans are there currently to make sure those goals are reached? - Could you tell me more about the trajectory of growth from this department into higher roles?

Yes, asking questions related to staff training, support. rewards and recognition, goals, challenges and opportunities are good. It's also good to ask if the position became open due to staff promotion or work volume. It is good to be with a company that promotes from within.

Inquiring about past and anticipated challenges in the role showcases your engagement and interest. It provides valuable insights into the work culture, expectations, and potential hurdles, allowing you to align your skills and strategies with the specific demands of the position. Don’t miss this opportunity!

Asking about the experiences that they had. Asking what they feel most proud about during their time. How would they say that the team that they work with is. What would they say the people are like that they serve.

I think even if you have a good understanding of the role, company, etc., and/or your questions were answered throughout the interview, still ask questions! This shows you’re engaged, interested and may help you stick out from other candidates.

Be yourself turn up on time be honest speak clearly and with confidence ask what the company does to help the environment find out what the company expects from you tell the interviewer what you can do for them and the company if you are the person they are looking for you will sense that you are going to fit in as a team player thank thank the interviewer / interviewers for their time show manners when leaving the room by placing your chair back where you found it

Do the little things right (show up on time, dress professionally, be presentable) and listen! Be precise with your answers and do not over talk.

It's important to remember that an interview goes both ways - the interviewer is getting to know you as much as you are getting to know them, the position and the company! You can't tell if the position is going to be the right fit for you based on the job description alone. Ask everything you need to (within moderation- ask about 3 questions at the end if time allows and even sprinkle some in throughout the interview if you can) to gauge if this is the right fit for you. In the end, if the candidate is offered the position, it should be the BEST fit for both parties!

I believe you can talk about any skills that you gain from being in the customer service role and see how that experience translate into the role that you’re interviewing for. Based on the customer service role he may have been in we tend to downplay that experience because your main task may be just answering phones or you may be in a transactional exchange setting. However, in all that you do with people and tasks you complete, you gain a whole world of experience, that translates immensely, in to other roles.
