The best Stage Managers I've worked with have a strong can-do attitude, paired with a clear sense of what is achievable within the time and contextual constraints. Balancing both is key, and this tends to come with experience. A Good stage manager will use this experience to protect her team from being overstretched. Stage management capacity is often the last thing the creative team are thinking of, and the SM is a vital part of ensuring that the cloth is cut accordingly. Adaptability and flexibility need to be closely linked to this understanding of capacity, and the general wellbeing of the team. But when the SM has a strong handle on that, the whole team can be freed up to be responsive and creative in how the event is run.

5 Showcase your value

One of the most important ways to differentiate yourself as a freelance stage manager is to showcase your value to your clients and collaborators. You need to demonstrate how you can help them achieve their goals, meet their needs, and exceed their expectations. For me the best stage managers ask lots of questions... As a Creative Director I want to feel that the SM has thought of everything, and I know from experience that there is no way they can do that unless they grill the senior creative team about their thoughts and plans. That grilling always makes me feel far more secure! It is of course my job to give clear written communication on a whole host of things, but there are always things missing, and a good SM will find those things and get clarity on them.
