How can you develop your technical writing skills?

I'd recommend starting by figuring out what kind of technical writer one wants to be. From my experience, there are the following somewhat independent branches of skills for technical writing: 1. Linguistics (spelling and grammar, copy editing, storytelling, advanced techniques of marketing, information architecture) 2. Documentation tools (software and technologies used to develop documentation: text processors (MS Word), documentation suites (MadCap Flare), CMS (WordPress), Docs-As-Code (a lightweight markup language + Git + a static site generator). One can learn many advanced skills and tricks in any of these. But most valuable is experience. 3. Domain knowledge (software dev, medical hardware, research, aerospace engineering).

Review the documents available in open source (User Guides, API documentation, Release notes, etc.) and create an outline or template. You'll notice that not all guides are the same, although about 50% of document layout follow similar content structure. This method allows you to examine other product documents, compare them with your writing standards, and identify areas for improvement.

Von deren Quellennachweis bin ich in die Normen eingestiegen und habe alles, das nur Ansatzweise mit dem Erstellen, Planen, Verwalten und Kennzeichnen von Unterlagen zu tun hat, gelesen. Danach habe ich mich mit der rechtlichen Seite besch?ftigt. Erst dann habe ich mit meiner ersten Bedienungsanleitung begonnen. -Nicht alles was toll aussieht erfüllt die Vorschriften! Aber für jeden, der im Einsatz als TR ist, ist das schlicht unn?tig. Hier reicht es v?llig sich auf dem Laufenden zu halten (was ja so wie so immer n?tig ist). Ich halte auch nichts davon fiktive Projekte zu bearbeiten. Weil, da fehlt einem schlicht die Rückmeldung zu. Wenn überhaupt, dann muss das ein reals Projekt sein. Und sei es eine BA, die ich dann im Internet zur Verfügung stelle. -Aber Achtung vor den rechtlichen Konsequenzen!-

If there's anything you can do to update or improve it, excellent! The idea is practicing layouts and understanding the choices that were made in the creation of quality technical documents. By recreating one, even without changes, you at least go through the motions of formatting and kerning and such. As always, do not plagiarize. Anything you duplicate should not go into your portfolio as something you've made, unless you've really changed and altered it and are clear about the origin. Bedienungsanleitungen müssen immer Gegengelesen werden! Ohne Gegenlesen der befragten und/oder beteiligten Kollegen geht keine BA an den Kunden/Endverbraucher! Das ist schlicht Grundvoraussetzung. Wenn ein Vorgesetzter und/oder Projektmanager meint, das gehe auch so, dann geschied das allein auf seine Verantwortung! Somit haftet diese Person auch für Sch?den durch die BA. Das mache ich immer allen Beteiligten und Befragten klar. Daher bekomme ich zumindest immer min. eine Rückmeldung.

Kurse sind zwar toll, k?nnen aber sehr in's Geld gehen. Leider kann man Kursen vorher nicht ansehen, ob diese einen wirklich weiterbringen. Auch wenn diese Kurse von in der TR-Welt bekannten Personen gehalten werden, kann man das nicht als sicher voraussetzen. Je allgemeiner ein Thema desto weniger hilft es einem weiter. Je spezifischer das Thema desto wahrscheinlicher die positive Erfahrung, allerdings desto teurer auch der Kurs! Ich hatte auch schon diverse Vortr?ge von als Koryf?en gehandelte Personen, die mehr als entt?uchend waren. Die Aussagen waren schlicht nicht zutreffend, weil falsch interpretiert. Nach ein paar Monaten revidierten diese Personen dann ihre Aussagen um 180°. Seit dem besuche ich nur noch kostenfrei Vortr?ge.

Mir pers?nlich f?llt erst mal "nur" die Zielgruppenanalyse ein. Klar, die kann ich dafür verwende. Je nach Zielgruppen kommt auch die vereinfachte Sprache, ein zielführender Aufbau und eine passende Sprachebene mit einheitlichem Stil in den Sinn. Aber alles andere, was ich mit Vertrieb/Marketing verbinde (übertreibungen, Rechtsunsicherheit, unhaltbare Versprechen, seichte Zusagen, Irreführungen, etc.) hat in der TR nichts zu suchen. Somit würde ich sagen, die TR würde zu sachlich und zu eindeutig etwas beschreiben. Das würde kaum ein Vertriebler gerne verwenden.

At university, I spent a semester doing a technical writing course. Our lecturer talked about white space, formatting and clear instructions. She remarked my document had visual appeal. After university my first job was desktop publishing, creating marketing material. I quickly learned how to use white space and graphics. When I started working as a technical writer, my first lesson; writing for your audience and provide clear information they understand first time. Therefore, all aspiring technical authors should remember the information their audience needs and ensure their documents meet their expectations. Following this approach is the key to success.

Some tips: 1. ALWAYS start with deciding on the targeted audience and goals for the document. 2. You should train to explain sophisticated ideas as clearly and easily as possible. Explain_like_i'm_five or Explain_to_your_Grandma style. That is a good mental exercise. 3. It's hard to measure the quality of content in objective units. Feedback loops and gathering are very important for most documentation, especially if you have little experience. Documentation published as web pages can use web metrics (like Google Analytics) - that helps, but doesn't solve the problem of improving the docs.

You can develop your technical writing skills by: Reading books: Teaches you to string words comfortably. Drawing and Painting: Teach you patience with your own mistakes Writing a movie or book review: Teaches you how to take reviews on your work well. Questioning practice: Teaches you to boldly ask doubts to your subject matter experts without worry of judgement and branding ( what others may think about me?) Writing and editing: Teach you to put words together into an idea, the way you want. Mind mapping: Teaches you to go with your thought flow. Blogging: Teaches you to have a clutter free head. Movies: Teach you perspectives. Although this list surprisingly has less of direct writing, it is worth a try. Has worked for me. :)
