How can you develop your technical skills in IS?

Get a college education & good degree first. Nowadays we question college education in America. Surprisingly, super smart people like Elon Musk and others in Silicon Valley promote this idea. Yes, no-college works for a few, but a college degree has been proven to work for more. A degree has lifted a lot of boats. A college degree is the fastest way to lift your plight. It is the fastest way to get certified competence. College provides well rounded individuals with skills. College provides structure. Being in College is exciting and fun, they are the best years of our lives.

Once involved in the project, based on the scope of work you must identify your own educational, personal missing knowledge and address that by either finding someone- temporary or permanent who would guide you through the process and see across all details or break the process into small steps and look for the information, apply along. Everything can be learnt but you must consider time and diligence. Errors are part of the process but testing is a must to avoid it. Always go back and check. Eventually the missing gaps will be successfully filled, guaranteed.

Start even before graduating. From my experience, working as an intern in IT projects allowed me to get the hands-on knowledge, technical abilities and experience. Look for opportunities and build the skills, at least one year before graduating. It will be much easier to find a job or create your own company if you start earlier.

It is important that, if you still don't know whether certain resources are really relevant and reliable, you always search for opinions from professionals in the area, whether on the internet or with professionals who are guiding you on this journey. Choosing irrelevant resources can lead to wasted money and time, things that can cost even more if the learnings from there are not the best practices.

Supply and demand. Identify areas of IT that need the most solutions and support. Get specialized certifications in areas that interest you. Seek out people in those areas to gain insight into what skills would be most helpful.

Enhance IS technical skills through online courses, certifications, and hands-on projects. Join tech communities, attend workshops, and collaborate on open-source projects. Stay updated on industry trends, practice coding, and seek mentorship. Engage in real-world applications to solidify skills and contribute to personal projects for practical experience.

No quantity of reading or examination in technical skill development surpasses the value of practical application, engagement in relevant projects, or direct involvement in the technical industry, which offers authentic real-world experience.

Obtain relevant certifications in areas like IT security (e.g., CompTIA Security+, CISSP), database management (e.g., Oracle Database Administrator, Microsoft SQL Server), or project management (e.g., PMP or Agile certifications).

This represents the current trend: initially serving as a system administrator for On-Premise infrastructure, then adapting to the emergence of Cloud technology. Consequently, there's a necessity to broaden one's technical skillset to manage hybrid cloud or complete cloud infrastructure. Additionally, there are prospects available in PAAS and SAAS, further diversifying the skill requirements.

Gain hands-on experience by working on personal projects or contributing to open-source projects. Building and deploying your own software applications or websites can be a valuable learning experience.

Seek out a current problem and determine if an IT solution exists to help solve it. If there isn’t one, start there. If there is one but it’s lacking in functionality or other reason, determine what needs to be fixed and what could be done to improve it. Develop a solution and seek peer feedback if it would work. This exercise is a great skill building tool.

One thing I have found helpful is that learning never stops. In the field of IS, you have to always keep up with the dynamics in this fields so as to improve your skillset.
